Ongoing Rescue Mission photo by TAP

(TAP) The Coast Guard and the Army have started a rescue mission of 700 refugees, who have been trapped on a broken fishing boat 32 kilometers away from Kerkennah Island (province of Sfax), reports TAP. Women and children are among the refugees who were fleeing violence in Libya, and illegally attempting to reach Italy.

On the evening of May 31st the Navy made sure that the refugees would not spend the night freezing and hungry by providing them with blankets and food. The bad weather however, prevented the Navy from doing so until today [June1st]. The Coast Guard Lieutenant of Sfax, Colonel Tahar Landoulsi told TAP that despite the bad conditions and the shortages in technical resources, all efforts and means are dedicated to saving lives. The authorities started the rescue mission by evacuating children. The operation consists of transporting refugees via small boats to a larger military ship. The survivors will then be transferred to the Ras Jedir Shucha Camp.

The fishermen of Kerkennah Island, also expressed their will to help the local authorities by contributing their boats as an attempt to accelerate the transportation process.

The Tunisian Internet Agency

The Tunisian youth revolted against censorship but it seems like a censorship-free Tunisia is too good to be true.

It all started with a decision issued by the Military Court to censor five Facebook pages, which according to the Ministry of Defence include content that “aim to destabilize the trust of citizens in the national army, and spread disorder and chaos in the country.”

As of late, the Tunisian Internet Agency (ATI) has been ordered to block all pornographic websites. In a press conference held on May 31 at the headquarters of the ATI, Moez Chakchouk, the CEO of ATI announced that they are going to appeal the decree in the Court of Appeal(s).

He asserted that blocking pornographic websites is not technically possible. In his explaination, he said that the ATI lacks economic resources to put into use a filtering device. Chakchouk also stressed the absence of an explicit legal text that would make the ATI responsible for Internet filtering.  He believes that such tasks should be the responsibility of special commissions which are currently unavailable in Tunisia.

Moez Ben Fraj [Judge] to Assabah: There are secret forces hindering the independence of the Juduciary and the state of law. The responsibility of  Media is similar to the responsibility of the government.

In an Interview with Moez Ben Fraj who is a renowned Judge and an advocate of the Independence of Judiciary, he asserts that the dignity of the judiciary is also the dignity of the State. Founding the state of law is closely linked to the independence of the judiciary and the eradication of corruption where there is no room for guardianship and intervention from any party or political authority. He says: “I think that there are forces of resistance to the judicial reform. There are several forces trying to impede our efforts like what we call “pressure group. Tunisia is living the experience of democratization. A great deal of public freedom is needed. Freedom of expression is essential and we need to criticize to be able to change. Therefore, I think that we should leave aside the issue of «dignity» and concentrate more seriously on reform.”

About the responsibility of the press at the moment, he stresses that it is similar to the government’s responsibility in all matters relating to success and progress of this community.
