While conducting research in Carthage Palace, the Investigation Committee Against Corruption stumbled upon a list of lawyers subservient to Ben Ali’s regime during the former president’s rule. Lawyers were regularly given large business enterprises in return for compliance.

The Investigation Committee Against Corruption was established shortly after January 14th, and has been charged with investigating cases of corruption related to the overthrown regime.

The Committee discovered that Ben Ali personally gave orders to assign high-profile cases to one particular lawyer, and to give lower-profile cases to another specific lawyer.  This “black list” of lawyers remained in the hands of the Chair’s committee head, Mr. Abdel Fateh Amor, who kept the list top secret from the rest of the committee.

After receiving news of this list, the Tunisian section of the Lawyer’s Union announced that it is undertaking appropriate disciplinary measures. The Tunisian branch of the Union has considered the list’s secrecy a breach of ethics.  However, the Investigation Committee Against Corruption refused the Lawyer’s Union’s claim and instead filed a complaint against it.  The Committee won the complaint yesterday, August 12th, and the verdict prompted the Committee to publicize the list. According to one expert, even an appeal will not be able to cancel execution of the verdict.

Still the reason why this list was kept a matter of secrecy remains unknown.  It should be noted that a famous lawyer, Mr. Ezzeddine M’hadhebi, was “invited” to resign recently from the Committee. Explanations about his “dismissal” are still undisclosed.  What is known for the moment, however, is that the lawyer was fired immediately.
