A protest in front of the municipality of Carthage calling for the halt of construction on the archeological site in Maalga occurred late this afternoon as a reaction to the resumption of activities in the site. Locals observed workers laying a foundation yesterday and organized the meeting today.

The site is classified by UNESCO and the Ministry of Culture and Preservation of Heritage as unsuitable for building on, by virtue of its “archeological, historical, aesthetic and natural interests.”

Yesterday, upon hearing the news of renewed damages the site in Maalga, nearby neighbors gathered at the site to protect the archaeological area. They report being surprised by the violence of thugs hired by “owners of the place.”

“This is ridiculous, The interim  goverment should interfere to stop them. We thought that we got rid of the Trabelsis,” stated Youssef Cherif, a blogger and MA in Archeology and History of Ancient Civilizations. “We demand enquiries now and without any delays.”

UNESCO are strict about any threats and infringement onto World Heritage designated sites, though unfortunately they do tend to move slowly. Perhaps a court injunction would be possible?
