According to Twitter reports, Azyz Amemi, Tunisian activist and blogger, was arrested and beaten yesterday by police after telling a joke about bananas in front of a police station.
In his last speech, Interim Prime Minister Beji Caid Essebsi compared violent policemen to monkeys. Monkeys and bananas have since become two subjects of sarcasm, and Azyz Amami is known for his particularly sarcastic sense of humor.
Prominent blogger and activist Slim Amamou first reported the arrest on his Twitter account. Amemi told Amamou that he was taken to a police station on Yugoslavia Street, in Tunis, where he was severely beaten.
The humor of Azyz Amemi, much appreciated by his friends and fans, was not appreciated by police agents, who resorted to violence to defend their dignity. The scene was the buzz of the Tunisian Blogpsphere. Tunisian bloggers expressed their discontent with violent police tactics that they hoped were banished in post-revolutionary Tunisia.
Slim Amamou reported on Twitter that he called Azyz Amemi, who said, “They have released me but I am going to drag those policemen into court for abusing me physically.”
Neither Aziz Amemi nor Slim Amamou could be contacted to confirm the details of this story.
