After demonstrations occurred yesterday, October 14th, in several cities in Tunisia, including Tunis, Gafsa, Sidi Bouzid and Bizerte, Ennahda denies any link with the protest against Nessma TV.

According to La Presse, Ghannouchi said that “Those Tunisians who took to the streets today to protest against the provocations made by certain media are defending Islam and do not need a tutor for that.”

According to Zoubair Chhoudi, Press Attaché for Ennahda, Nessma crossed the line by airing the film “Persepolis.” In his opinion, Nessma was disrespectful to Tunisia’s Muslim identity. He argued that Islam prohibits the depiction of God and that the movie was a provocation to all believers, not only Muslims, and added that Ennahda is militating for freedom of expression.

According to Zoubair Chhoudi, Ennahda accepted Nebil Karoui’s apologies.

That is not the way to defend Islam .. Not by violence!! There is the Islamic way which is a peaceful way to defend Islam! And there are other wise ways to settle provocative actions which are assumed to be disrespectful!

The least Ghanouchi and Ennahdha can do whether they are linked to this violence or not is by coming out and calming these violent protesters who they in fact happen to support the Ennahdha party! At least it would be one good thing that Ghanouchi and his party can do to ease the situation since these protestors are more likely to listen to them, if, that is, Ennahdha does not support these type of violent protesters..
