Find below the results from the Tunisian elections held October 23rd, 2011 (international results are at the bottom). The Constituent Assembly will appoint a new transitional government and draft a new consitution. The international world is watching closely, as this is the first election after the ouster of former Tunisian President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali sparked protest and revolution across the Arab world earlier this year.

For an explanation of how the results are assigned, look at our FAQ of the proportional list voting system.

When will we be given the total number of votes cast and the percentage of the population able to vote, and not simply the percentage of those registered to vote?

    1. Chad /

This is a tragic loss of a great secular country. I had hoped for a French-style secular republic in Tunisia, that gave no respect to Islamists.

Looking at the results of this election, I fear that Tunisia has gone backwards. Ben Ali’s dictatorship, however bad it was, was at least secular.

I’m not Tunisian, but I want them to prosper. Looks like that will not happen. Turkey is one step away from an authoritarian regime. Now Tunisia will model itself after Turkey? I thought this Revolution was supposed to bring a democracy!

      A concerned American

      • Naina /

You are so backward. Wake up Chad. Segregation and looking down on people of a particular faith is really undemocratic. Your secularism preaches hatred over valid members of a society. Let everyone participate in developing the country. Who cares if you want to be secular or not.

      • Mohammed /

Concerned American worry about the lack of democracy in the USA!

Tell me Chad is the only result you want to see is a government that will serve the interest of USA?

      • azhar /

@chad ” I thought this Revolution was supposed to bring a democracy!”, If this is not democracy, what do you mean by democracy then, the one which yields your puppet.
I don’t understand what do you mean by backward, you can see keeping your both eyes open, whether turkey has taken the nation back or forward.
The biased mind can never understand the reality.
        Long live tunisia…..

      • Turkey is more democratic now than before, Chad. Secular fascism and fanaticism is as bad as any religious one. Congratulations Tunisia and thank you. Look at the wall street occupiers to see how the genie of freedom that you unleashed is inspiring the whole world!
        A grateful American

    2. Noman /

Congratulation to all the tunisian brothers and sister.I hope that your country will prosper in all dimensions for good. Turkey is a good example.

      • salman /

turkey has a fascist government which tortured, raped and killed many political prisoners, kurds and armenians for years. you call that a “good example”?!

        • Raheel /

Well said Salman. Capitalism indeed is a poison, and even the western societies have also started realizing that. Look at “Occupy Wall Street” campaign. Its all because of realizing that capitalism is poison.

    3. tunisian /

      I agree tremendously with Chad.
Ennahda is definitely going to bring Tunisia backwards.
Chad, most tunisians voted for the secular parties. Ennahda doesn’t represent the tunisian people at all! Alot of people are furious about the results.
I also hoped for a secular regime; this is just horrible.
There were also many voter violations that ennahda was involved in.
Ennahda also had one thing secular parties didn’t have much of: funds.
      This wasn’t fair at all.

        • salman /

Hitler and Nazi party of Germany got peoples vote in 1930s. not because they were representing german people, but because they were deceving people.

      • Raheel /

If you are standing in reverse direction then everything moving forward will look like (to you) as moving backward. Get up, correct your direction and Orientation, align yourself with MAJORITY and you will immediately realize that Ennahda is taking Tunisia forward!

        • salman /

theocracy can not take a country forward. maybe you should correct your direction.
Ennahda is politicaly and ideologicaly close to islamists in Iran. it can only direct Tunisia in the same path which khomeini did in iran. and that is certainly not forward.

          • Raheel /

You know Salman, it was Islam that brought light to Europe. When Muslims were heading north, progressing and bringing new inventions to the world in all the fields, Europe’s roads were filled with dirt and mud.

Islam can only move you forward and is much ahead of others in the world. US banned slavery 200 years back whereas Islam banned slavery 1400 years ago.

It’s the western propaganda – nothing more than that.

            • salman /

your understanding of history is incorrect. islam never banned slavery (Quran clearly accepts slavery) or brought light to europe, but im not going to discuss it here because that is not the question.
islamists are using religion to create their own aristocray. look at those countries which they have seized power in them. this is question of class struggle not religion. religion is just an excuse which islamists use to cover fascism. just like they did in Iran. you should prevent your country from facing the same fate. Islamic regime of Iran is responsible for death of about 1 million people. yet, Tunisian islamists refuse to condemn that regime. they are trying to do the same. an islamic regime can kill leftists and trade unionists because of apostasy, just like it did in Iran.
what dont you analyse political, social and economical program of different political trends instead of blindly following one because of religion? your excuse for supporting islamists in Tunisia is what you think moslems did more than thousand years ago, nothing more. stop it! dont let opportunist and corrupt politicians use you so easily.

    4. tunisian /

I agree tremendously with Chad (except the last comment).
Ennahda is definitely going to bring Tunisia backwards.

Tunisia is secular, and therefore, the government should represent that.
Ennahda might have had alot of votes this time, but they certainly won’t next time. The democratic parties were clearly not as prepared, and there was much confusion in the polls!

      • Chad /

I would not expect you to agree with that last one, Tunisian. lol.

If you did agree, you’d move to France or the US to escape. As many Atheist Tunisians have already done.

I may have been forthright and politically incorrect – but you are arabs, you expect this. Or at least my Saudi friend says.

      • Raheel /

congratulations to muslim brothers and sisters in tunisia for this historic movement.it was tunisia which showed arabs the path to revolution and now made it clear how to proceed.may peace and blessings of Allah subhana hu ta’ala be on all my tunisian sisters and brothers.

    7. mohamed /

well done tunisians. rise up with your brothers and sisters to prosper your nation. i have no doubt that ennahda, with strong islamic principle and dedication will propel tunisia to a greater achievement, as what being achieved by our brothers in turkey within a short span of time. may your spirit ignite further in egypt, libya and all other muslim nations. well done again from your brother in malaysia.

    8. Tunisian from London /

Clearly tunisian and Chad live like ostriches their heads in the sand, well wake up there are tunisian verywhere not only your entourage !
This is the choice of Tunisian and we will not be afraid of what we are and what we choose, this is it get over it. your comments remind me a BEN ALI era this is over. Tunisia is clearly composed of people who have different views and am happy that everyone had the chance to cast its voice. Now let’s respect each other and start going forward. Democracy is the rule of the majority. If Ennahdha has been elected then congratulation to them and good luck to the tunisian people.
At least people who got manners have been elected the like of Chad and Tunsiian do clearly lack respect for their fellow by posting such comments but so be it freedom of expression .

    9. usman zakariya /

congrats my dear islamic bro’s nd sisters in tunis.may God bless u and wish u all a bright future ahead…..ur brother in faith, usman, thailand.

      As-salamu alaykum,
Some man want democracy to be their idée instead off the will of the people. They want elections with the come-out of their wish-full thinking and not the choice of the elector. Come to reality, let the voice of the habitants speak. Welcome to real life.
      Ma’a as-salamu

    11. Wassim /

Almost 50% of Tunisians voted for Ennahdha, this is the REALITY, wake up people, if you did not vote Ennahdha, then the one just next to you did ;) congratulation for the winners, this is the rule of democracy and election, it is better to wish the best for TUNISIA and work on that rather than doing the opposite and start insulting the winners and acting as children or bad loosers. Whoever insulting Ennahdha, Tunisians, Arabs, or Muslims, can just bark as much as he/she can. It is just a shame that a “Tunisian” (if he/she still deserve this nationality) does such thing to his/her brothers/sisters… But at the end who care, the whole world was amazed with the Tunisian revolution which half of it was made by Ennahdha Arab Muslims. It is clear that narrow minded and faithless tunisians that were completely brain washed during the Ben Ali era feel completely lost and disoriented now, they cannot accept different ideas but they blame Ennahdha for being the one doing that!!!
Islam will never bring people backward, this is what the non-muslims squeeze into weak people minds. The real danger for Tunisia is not Ennahdha but the remaining RCD dirty people with absolutely zero social values who cannot accept to live in clean environment without corruption, therefore they will try their best to dissociate the country and push it to sink for just their own benefit, they are ready to sell the country for just some money.
It is time to clean the country, improve education, health, industry, agriculture, tourism, medias… Bring Tunisia to a higher level just like what Turkey did.
Good luck Ennahdha, I am sure that heart-sick people will not stop your effort and success.
TUNISIA IS MUSLIM ARABIC COUNTRY FOREVER, AND WELCOME EVERYONE WHO RESPECT THAT ;)

    12. Mohammed /

How will Ennahada bring Tunisia 14 centuries back? What will they do? Stop repeating the views of secular fanatics of the European media and government!

In politics, as anywhere else, the truth lies in the actions, the personalities and their integrity, not in the words. The actions of Ennahda and partners remain to be seen. I wish them well. I hope their learning curve is steep, the world is in a troubling phase of economic and social upheaval. I hope Ennahda will stick to common-sense ethical values, below literal interpretations of the Qor’an. This is why many Tunisians voted for them. Most importantly, democracy is not primarily the rule of the majority, but the respect for minorities, guaranteed through the law. If Ennahda manages to be truly inclusive then the world will have gained and Tunisia will have a guaranteed place in the history books. If fear and resentments start to rule, then everybody will lose. Congratulations to the winner. Encouragement to the losers. Democracy is not just elections, but continued everyday engagement, through checks and balances. Stay involved.

    14. Maqsood /

Congratulation to the people of the Tunis who they participated in the current election and raised their voices of their choice.

It is irrelevant that the party has the majority will bring country backward to 14th century which is definitely not possible if election process continue ultimately it will be rooted and this will be the foundation for developed and stabled Tunis which all Tunisian wants it. Voice of the majority should be respected and let the things get going forward. Just stop rumouring about the Islam phobia or secular phobia. We should all respect other faith and respect humanity.

    15. Ahmed Khamassi /

      Hi,

I would like to say to any fanatic (Muslim, Secular or otherwise), leave Tunisia alone, we are not thus.

I would have preferred a secular party to be the largest, however, that is not possible. There are 99 secular parties competing against one Islamist movement. So, it is a trivial conclusion to say that one Islamist party is expected to win the largest share of the vote.

Without attempting to second guess the results, if Ennahdha ends up winning 40% or so of the popular vote, that says that 60% of Tunisians are secular.

This is a tremendous achievement for a country that sits in a region where Ennahdha is seen as heretic liberals.

Tunisia and Tunisians are the winners. I am sure that Ennahdha will not deviate from the democratic contract and that a better organised and consolidated secular front will make a come back next year.

      Vive La Tunisie

      • Bara /

We had enough of secularism with Ben Ali. The people have given their say loud and clear. Ennahda is neither extreme nor moderate Islamists as they would like to term it in the west. But rather “real” Islamist party, if you are a Muslim they will represent your belief.

        • Faith /

What we had with Ben Ali was not secularism. It was dictatorship and lack of freedom of religion and lack any type of freedom. I hope that Ennahda, if they become in power, will represent all Tunisians and not only those with Muslim beliefs.

ennhada has 43 percent of the seats declared so far and ennahda is not the only islamic party.aridha chabbia which has third larget majority consists of former ennahda members.this makes the vote percntage of islamit parties well above 60 percnt.also the hardcore secularists like pdp have been completely wiped out and those being soft visa vis islamists like cpr have gained.viva la islame’

So if Aridha Chaabia is disqualified, then presumably their seats would go to the party with the next most votes. Based on the results that have come in thus far, who stands to gain?

We Indian Muslims salute the brave tunisians for supporting Rashid Al Ganooshi’s Annahda. If you find the government is going straight support if you find its deviation never tolerate and have to correct it.

First, congratulations to the Tunisian people for conducting their free elections peacefully, democratically and in such great numbers – a credit for all other democracies to look at and admire.

I would have preferred from my political standpoint that a secular party would have shown a strong showing, and so far secularism has, as @Ahmed Khamassi earlier pointed out, 60% have voted for secular parties – unfortunately that vote is split in comparison to the ‘one’ Islamic party.

        @Muhammed Aslam and @Dr.K.Jabir, India
Two Indian Muslims, praising Ennahda and stating to “deviation never tolerate” and “neglect the secular fanatics”.
Both of them living in a secular state, not a Hindu dominated one, as so could easily have been the case – a country that protects the individuals right to free expression, the rights of religious observance, the liberties of minorities and does not codify law based on the principles of the Hindu majority.

Rather than praising Ennahda, should they not be praising the democratic and secular principles of India as a template for Tunisia to follow, rather than the Christian Democrats of Europe and the Justice and Development Party of Turkey.

        • Mohammed /

Reality for the muslims living in India is one of discrimination and oppression. Look at the unemployment, how many muslims occupy position in government, or senior position in organisations, mosques are often attacked, muslims are often attacked.

Now you claim secularism is the answer what about the freedom to wear Hijab and study? did your secularism ensure this right to the women of Tunisia who wish to wear the Hijab? Who should decide how a woman dresses? What is the criteria? What is acceptable in censorship?

Do we have total freedom? Does absolute freedom exist? No there will always be censorship, laws otherwise there will be total chaos. So who decides what is right and what is wrong. As a muslim I take my code of dress from Islam. I have to cover my self from the navel to the knee and wear loose clothes. Why don’t we allow people to walk around naked? Why it is my freedom right? I am not harming any one and even if they are traumatised by seeing me in the nude that is their problem it is my freedom right? So who is going to legislate what is acceptable and what is not? In the secular societies this border is always shifting. In UK it was considered immoral for a woman to bear her ankles in the Victorian times now it is okay for a woman to wear a piece of string.

It is the same as the hypocrisy of so called freedom or freedumb as I prefer to call it!

In France they claim to hold Freedom but a woman is not free to wear the niqab..why? A woman can walk around wearing next to nothing but not cover up if she so chooses!

The laws of Europe, USA are rooted in Judeo/Christian teachings. Ofcourse the secular fanatics and freedumb supporters are slowly eroding those values. Never the less much of laws and moral issues are addressed from biblical teachings.

        • Raheel /

inspires121: Both of them are fed up with so called Indian Secular Democracy. It’s just a title, otherwise, if you look deeper, you will see Hindu Fanatics (who are not minority BTW) killing Muslims in Kashmir, Gujrat and everywhere else on one hand and carrying out massacre of low cast Hindus that get converted to Christianity on the other hand.

Don’t talk about Secularism and Democracy in India. We had enough of that.

    19. Leila /

in sfax, with more than 66000 votes, Ennehda gets 4 seats while Ettakatol gets a seat with only 6800 votes … that’s not proportional at all!
      someone can explain?

      • houssam nassif /

It is a proportional representation with largest remainder

        Read:
        http://www.tunisia-live.net/2011/08/08/faqs-on-the-constitutional-elections/

Total voters in Sfax 1: 150,682
        Total nb of seats: 7
        Voters per seat: 150,682/7 = 21,526

        Annahda had 66,402 votes
In the first pass, number of seats Nahda gets is:
        66,402/21,526 = 3.08
        So Nahda gets 3 seats, and has a remainder of 66,402 – (3 * 21,526) = 1,824 votes

Since no other party exceeded 21,526 votes, the remainder 4 seats are attributed according to the largest remainder.
CPR has a remainder of 14,302
        Aridha a remainder of 11,840
        Takatol a remainder of 6,884
        Nahda a remainder of 1,824
        etc…

so you rank the parties by their remainders, and the first 4 parties get 1 seat each.
Nahda’s remainder being small (1,824 votes), it doesn’t get any more seats

        • Leila /

ok … thanks Houssam for the explanations, but in my opinion this remainder story doesn’t make it proportional at all!
A lot of parties are gaining their seats with few thousands of votes due to the remainder!
For instance in sfax, ennahda should have about 10 times more seats than etakatol but they end up with only 4 times more!

          • arild nordby /

Hey, Leila! (Greetings from Norway, and congratulation to ALL Tunisians on this great occasion!).

The point is that if you have a FIXED number of seats to distribute, that makes it, in general, impossible to get the proportionality ratios among the mandates that you think of.

            Look on it another way:
Ennadha got less than half of the TOTAL number of votes.

Is it “fair” that they get 4 out of 7, i.e, a majority?

The largest remainder system is one of those that skews the proportionality “most fairly”, and if I’ve got this correctly, this system is generally to the benefit of the largest parties.

          • houssam nassif /

            Hi Leila

The proportional with largest remainder is a system that favors little parties and generates a more diverse representation.

My guess is that it has been adopted in this election to be able to represent the largest amount of political parties, and have a very diverse and representative parliament.

The con is that you may end up with large differences in votes/MP quotient, as you just pointed out.

the pro is that now more voters are represented in the parliament.

            • arild nordby /

Actually, it is still favouring large parties, but LESS SO than other distribution systems.

              To Leila:

Remember that Ennadha’s 4th seat is gained out of just 8% of the “required” electoral base behind it.

The OTHER parties have much larger shares of single seats than Ennadha; shouldn’t their shares of single seats be counted prior to Ennadhas fourth?

    20. leila /

Hi all, in order to show you how much the reminder system skews the votes proportionality, I divided the number of votes per seat for the largest and smallest represented parties, as you can see, in some places like Kebili this ratio is almost five! Which means that the largest party (Ennahda) needs about 5 times more votes for a seat in the parliament!

Congrats Tunis. Your people saw the light in the Iranian and Saudi Arabia models and way of life. Now, every Tunisian man will be able to marry four. Back to the year 1200. Way to go.

      • mohamed /

better to have four legal wives who get equal protection under the law than to have one legal wife and three concubines (prostitutes) as being practice by many of the self-proclaimed ‘modern/advanced/pragmatic’ secularists. yet, they expect the muslims to emulate their rotten family system. only a dumb will want to follow the fast-decaying western family institution. even worse, in the name of equality…. even a women in the west now have one legal husband and three illegal gigolos. for those staunch secularists…i fell sorry for you guys. better go home and check your wives’ underwear…they may have few other men’s semen stain there. and please check your so called children…whether they actually bear your surname or someone else’. or possibly, even your wife might no be so sure who is the father….

and yet…you are telling us to follow your way of life? no way…go and fly kite!

        • salman /

you think you can stop prostitution and corruption with laws? that is what the islamists want you to belive. what can the islamic laws do? have the police arrest the man or women who betrayed his/her wife or husband and then execute him/her? that is what an islamic government does. is it effective? look at countries with islamic governments.
by allowing men to have 4 wifes and unlimited temporary wifes, you just legalize the prostitution. in this way, poor women may sell themselfs as “temporary wifes”.
instead you can look at social base of prostitution: Capitalism is what turns women to MERCHANDISE and encourges men to misuse them. islamists are not anti capitalist, on the contrary, they encourage it. in Iran and Arabia even trade unions are banned. in those countries Fascism is hiding itself behind the religion. dont let this to happen to your country.

          • Mohammed /

Temporary wives is practiced by Shias and Tuinisians are mostly Sunnis.

Many Sunni and some Shia scholars disagree with temporary marriages.

Islam does not encourage immoral activities unlike secularism who don’t know what values to adhere to. Just look at censorship in secular societies where the mantra of freedom has pushed the boundries of decency and good taste further and further.

Of course Islam will not irradicate crime and prostitution completely but at least Sharia provides the guideline of what is acceptable and what is not.

For example if I am freedumb fanatic then I can argue incest, porongraphy, orgy, incest, beastiality, necrophilia are all acceptable as long as I am not harming any one and it is all consentual.

            • skander /

More stupidity from the Muslim. Beastiality, necrophilia, and incest is illegal in Western Nations. Actually Westerners say Muslims do incest when they marry first cousins. As for pornography who cares? pedophilia is a lot worse than all those you talked above. It has victims who are very young and innocent. But why didn’t you have pedophilia in your list of sins? it’s all subjective. One can make laws based on society, not stupid laws from 7th century society because they think “God” says so. Quran allows slavery, how come you’re not asking to bring back slavery so we can practice true sharia law? because then it will make Quran look like a book not written like God as if God really did write the Quran, he would not allow the enslavement of others. Also God would have probably banned pedophilia and not let his prophet have sex with a 9 year old. Either case, I live in western society, I live the way I want to live others, live their way. Poor people from inner city abuse their freedom, but for the most part it works out pretty well.

    22. Mantook /

      Sharia law 101:
A man can marry 4 women. He can divorce and re-marry as he pleases.
A man can marry any female regardless of the age. Yes, a 6 year old is included.
Women inherit half of the man.
Women testimony in courts is half of the man.
Non-muslims are not equal to muslims, they must convert or pay tax to the muslims.
      Non-muslims cannot govern.
No Churches or non-muslim prayer places to be instated.
This is in addition to all the stoning, lashing, beheading, servering limbs, etc. Enjoy.

      • Bindas /

        And NON- Sharia Law:
A man can marry or don’t marry, have sex with any one , any number you please and produce fatherless children.
A man can have sex with any one and bcome incest
Woman is burdened with running her family, childrens
Use the women in strip clubs and enjoy their flesh. Make them commercial item.
Muslims are not at per with Non- muslims , so grab their land, keep them unsafe
and prosecute them as you wish
Muslims can govern only if they obey our rules, consider us master or support the dictator who is our slaves
This is in addition to bombing, killing, target killing

        • salman /

if you want to know what can a Islamic government do to a country, look at Iran. you should prevent your country from facing the same fate. Mullahs told many lies before seizing power in 1979 but after that they filled Iran with torture chambers and mass graves. you think there is no prostitution or bombing and killing in Iran?
secularism never encourages prostitution or corruption. it states that all people should be equal regardless of religion, sex or race. but in a islamic state people are officially not equal. is that what you truly want?

        • salman /

secularism states that all people should be equal regardless of religion, sex or race. secularism never encourages prostitution or corruption.
according to islamic laws, people who belive in islam are not equal to others. non religious people can be killed according to that laws. in Iran, the government killed leftists and worker activists because of apostasy. of course “apostasy” was just an excuse for killing. government meant to open the way for barbaric capitalism by using religion. dont let this to happen in your country.

          • Mohammed /

            Stop peddling lies Salman.

Go and learn about what Islam says about equality. Ever heard the Prophet Mohammed (pbuh) last sermon?

If you want to tell people about an Islamic Government i.e. Islamic Caliphate then you need to look at the Ottoman era and before.

            • salman /

what islam says about equality is clear: followers of different religions dont have equal rights, men and women are not equal according to quran. non religious people can be killed because of apostasy. quran apporoves slavery.
islamists are just misusing ordinary peoples belive in islam. today question is not about religion, islamists are trying to restore capitalist order by using religion for covering the class struggle. they have done it before. islamists support the same economical system which neo liberals support in rest of the world. dont let those opportunist and corrupt politicians use you so easily. they will continue bin alis path with an islamic mask. working class and toiling masses of Tunisia and rest of the world should not seperate themselfs because of religion, sex or race. what islamists (like the fanatics of other religions) are trying to do is creating this seperation.
when Iranian islamists where about to seize power, they used same propaganda which their Tunisian brothers are using today. they killed about 1 million people and ruined Iran. you should prevent your country from facing the same fate.

            • Mohammed /

More lies Salman! Just can not provide specific evidence can you? You state the Quran says this and that yet no specific lines quoted or verse and chapter cited!

    23. skander /

You can barely speak English, and not sure what you are talking about. first point is stupid, fatherless children happens just as must as in Sharia law as non-sharia areas. People are just like that. incest is illegal everywhere, not just Sharia you idiot. women who is stupid enough to have children with man who is not her husband and irresponsible will have to raise her children alone if they can’t force father to pay support in Western Nations. It’s sad, but that’s the price, Sharia law would beat her and make her and her children outcasts. The rest of your letter makes no sense, just lets live in peace, you live the way you want to, we live the way we want to. If there is a law in Sharia that is good for society nothing is wrong with making law, but not making laws just because the Quran says so. Quran also says world is flat and sun goes in orbit, so take it with a grain of salt.

Islam forbids incest and clearly states with whom you can and can not have a relationship.

On the other hand certain parts of the secular society are debating that incest is acceptable and euthanasia is acceptable.

Iran actually achieved a lot. Due to the sanctions they have developed and manufactured their own weapons, nuclear power, infrastructure. Definitely more than the Shah of Iran!

        • salman /

what are you talking about? Iran has kept people hungry in order to build weapons. nuclear plant has been under construction for over 35 years and its outdated before starting to work. there is not much of infrastructure either.
the corrupt government of Iran has done nothing but oppressing people and plundering its country.
if you belive the islamist regime of Iran is not a dictatorship and has “achieved a lot”, then show us at least one non governmental political party, trade union or any kind of popular organization which is not banned in Iran.
no body wants the shah back. people had built their soviets which could replace the bourgeois type of government after fall of shah in 1979. workers and toiling masses where starting to built a democratic and just society. but islamists started a massacre in 1980s in order to stop the progress of revolution.

Whoever links Islam to a country (Iran, Saudi, Afghanistan…) or people (Rachid Ghannouchi…) needs to learn to speak about something that he understands and he educates himself about it before throwing superficial thoughts showing his total ignorance about Koran and Sonna.
This is what is happening these days, the ennemies of Islam are linking it to terrorism, lack of respect to women, and ignorance just to keep Muslims weak and not unified… This is expected from them, but the real problem is that faithless Muslims are unfortunately giving up their own roots and are thinking that being linked to these ennemies will make them feel higher. They do not understand that at the end they are outside both groups…
All the best for Tunisia the arabic and Muslim country forever accepting all kind of people. Follow the examples of Turkey and Malaysia and you will be for sure the third Muslim country showing that Islam is the real solution to improve the condition of the people.

    30. In the Monastir table current as of 9:30 am, October 26th, 2011, there is a mistake. The votes as they are in the table, would not result in the seats published in the same table.

65,800 votes from 340,797 would not be 3 seats.

My guess: mistake is probably to be found in total votes figure.

      • houssam nassif /

Nahda is reported to have gotten 65,800 votes.
I find it really unlikely that Nahda (or any other party) gets a result ending in double-zero.

When i count the totals of the partys votes, they are FAR below the totals in the region., Therefore either.

      A. this is a partial count and seat numbers shouldnt be estimated yet
      B. many many many small parties candidates not listed got less then 2000 votes each

Like in Jendouba- the parties listed add up to about 75 thousand out of the 113 – where are the voters for the other 38 thousand, especially if seats where rewarded to a party that got 3 thousand votes,

Just hope this vote won’t bring Tunisia to be a close state or the turism will fall down very quickly and, we all know, is the most important part in the economy of this country.

Aridha Chaabia has taken one of the seats in Italy following a recount of the vote (this news is actually a day old), this needs to be shown in the results table. Also, Chams Aridha is actually the same party as Aridha Chaabia.

      • arun /

They tried to fool the people that they are ‘moderate’ but in a 90% turnout with huge numbers of poor people , they still failed to get even 40% of the vote.
Of course Obama might ‘ease their way to power’like the fool Carter did for Ayotallah Khomeini and they will unleash mass killing of seculars ,and an oppressive violent society.
The secular parties should get together to form the govt.

          • salman /

you can not claim that mass killing didnt happen by islamists. unlike “arun” i belive those killings were not because of secularism. carter wasnt a fool either, he knew exactly how to stop Irans revoluion. he used the islamists to destroy progressive and leftist political organizations, trade unions, worker and peasant soviets and in this way he crushed the revolution. same thing can happen in Tunisia.
have you seen “persepolis” animation by marjan satrapi? i heard it was shown in Tunisia and islamists protested against it. that animation is based on a true story. see it once, its worth it.

            • Mohammed /

Really Salman you are going to try and claim that just because Ennahada are an islamic party they will be killing secularists! What is your evidence that they will do this?

              Stop trying to create fear.

            • Mohammed /

Also the FEAR is dead! It died when the brave Tunisians told Ben Ali and his thugs enough!

So if Ennahda or any party secular or otherwise try to use FEAR it will no longer work. The Tunisians will never go back to days when they were scared to merely criticise Ben Ali or his in laws!

So all you secular fanatics and freedumb crazies no need to generate fear if Ennahada or any other coalition try to use violence and intimidation they will not succeed.

            • salman /

many Iranian thought the era of fear is over after fall of shah in 1979. but the islamist regime soon reorganizaed its police and army, plus it organized special groups of its followers called Basij who where even more brutal than ordinary political police. they where paid by government and killing became their job. islamists threw war grenades in middle of students demonstrations, used heavy artillary fire against cities and villages of Kurdestan, tortured political prisoners to death and …
im not saying these will happen in Tunisia, i hope such things will never happen. all im saying is that its possible.

Hi my brothers and sisters from Tunisia!

Many many congratulations on your achievement for democracy and free elections. I’m not a Tunisian but still it delights me to see that your struggle has started to bear its fruits.

I want to bring to the attention of my musilm friends, one small thing which could be a very big thing as well. You guys have been using the term “Islamist” for one party which is not correct. The right term is “Islamic”. Islamist mean someone with fundamentalists believes, for example Al-Qaida is an Islamist group. Islamic is a positive term and all practicing and moderate muslims are Islamic. Please bear in mind the difference between Islamist and Islamic.

      Thanks and congratulations again. :)

Salam Tunisian Brothers and Sister !
First of all i would like to congratulate all of you for your revolution and peaceful elections….
i am not from tunisia but i followed all elections in news ..i am from Pakistan …
i am very happy that you people select Islamic party Annahda in elections… this is a completely new ideology for Arab world..i think in Egypt whenever elections will held Muslim Brotherhood will win there and in Libya after Qazzafi Islamic parties will come in power…so tunisia set an example for all world that muslims are peace loving people and if world will give them chance to prove it then they can prove it…
Once again congratulations to all of you :)

Funny how some these secular fanatics and freedumb crazies worry about the life after death on their death bed. They worry about dying in a state of Islam and not Kuffar!

Islam is a part of the vast majority of Tunisians whether they supported Ennahda or not.

Stop apologising for being good muslims. Just because the zionist media have an agenda against Islam it is a shame to see some educated Tunisians repeating the same islamophobic statements.

We can not run away from Sharia since Islam is a way of life and it affects us if we are muslim in all aspects of our life.

From Birth to Marriage to Death. Family law, commercial law, international law, criminal law.

      • leonidas /

Religion should set a moral safeguard on politics and government but not enter politics and govern. We Maltese neighbours of yours learned that at our own expense in the 50s-60s.

Did you know that whoever voted for the then Mintoff’s labour party was interdicted? That meant that you could not marry in church or be buried on consecrated ground … a terrible punishment for a Maltese now let alone 50 years ago!

Today the Maltese church regrets it because:

        a) It caused a backlash eventually by the people
        b) You are threatening one perceived communist/dictator with a dictatorial edict which in itself is contradictory and unsustainable in the long run.
        c) The instability that caused was bad for business and foreign investment

Tunisia right now needs to send a clear message that it is business friendly to the rest of the world. Those that have any sense will take care of their own moral standing irrespective of whether there is a religious authority or not that tells them to do so.

      • The very fact that the elections took place in a peaceful manner gives hope to many oppressed peoples all over the world. Outcome of the elections are a matter for the Tunisians to mull over. One can not comment on them without knowledge of the existing conditions in Tunisia. Anyone who condemns Muslims for being Muslims is either a fool or a fanatic.

        • leonidas /

Nobody is condemning the Tunisian Muslim party which was democratically elected after all. On the contrary outsiders are very hopeful that this election becomes a success and by success I mean that it will reflect the majority of the Tunisian’s choice.

My comment is addressed at Mohammed’s comment who may himself not even be Tunisian because when one mentions Sharia law then thats a completely different ball game. It is in the same category as applying Roman Catholic law or Jewish law in place of an evolved updated civic law. Heck if applying Roman or Napoleonic law would fall foul of modern practices. For example: data protection, property rights, business interests …etc.

After all Italians have the so called Demo-Cristiani and the Republicans are stereotypically the born again Christian type are they not? But the law that must and should be created different. Yes, religion by those that hold those principals should allow it to guide them but not dictate the word of the law that must be arrived at in an objective manner.

Tunisia … good luck to the future … so far a great start anyways :)

    41. salman /

      my reply to Mohammed:
my english is not very good but i will try to answer all of your comments in one place.
1- if you still doubt about torture and mass killings in Turkey and Malaysia, go to wikipedia, search the names of those countries plus words like “torture” or “human rights”. enough sources and refrences are mentioned in wikipedia articles. i tried to write address of those pages in one comment but its waiting for “moderation” and i dont know how long will it take.
2- about Iran: in recent election in Tunisia all of parties with different views including liberals, nationalists, islamists, leftists and others were free right? are they free in Iran too? absolutly not. in Iran anyone who disagrees with government will be oppressed. if you say this is not true, then show us a single political party which does not follows governmental ideology and is legal. i give you an example. there is a leftist party called PCOT in Tunisia right? that party was allowed to participate in elections and has 3 seats in parliment so far. that party is internationaly connected to an Iranian party called party of labour of Iran(toufan). toufan is oppressed by government and many of its members have been killed. in one case the government sent assasins to Vienna and killed mr chitgar who lead the party. in 1988 government killed almost all of political prisoners who were not sentenced to death even by the islamists barbaric laws. about 4500 names from the victims of that massacre are gathered until today.
why is islamist regime of Iran so brutal? because it knows that people oppose it. in two years after the revolution(1979), islamists had to tolerate the others. they also managed to deceive people with religion. but as soon as they reorganized police and army, they began a brutal massacre. they oppressed anyone who resisted them and soon lost peoples support.
3- i didnt said that islamists will be necessarily killing secularists, i said that islamist will be killing secularists if necessary. they might come to an agreement with liberals just like turkey or malaysia. workers and toiling masses will be oppressed either way. they will use violence only if its necessary for stoping the revolution from overthrowing current economical-social system.
4- about evidence from quran, as i said my english is not good enough to dicuss everything. but you have read quran at least once havent you? do you remember anything about “Nesa”(women) part, where quran clearly states that men and women are not equal? slavery is also legalized several times in quran. but as i said before, what matters today is not religion. islamist are just using religion to deceive people. they will ally with devil if it serves their interests.

        Equality
        1) Eqaulity in Basic Humanity
Both the male and the female are equal in terms of their humanity. Islam does not categorize women, for instance, as the source of evil in the world for some & original sin that caused Adam (Peace be Upon Him) to be dismissed from Paradise, or to be the cause of evil in the world by setting loose a Pandora’s box of vices, as some other religious doctrines and fables teach.

Allah, the Exalted and Almighty, states in the Glorious Qur’an:

(O mankind! Be dutiful to your Lord, Who created you from a single person (Adam), and from him (Adam) He created his wife (Eve), and from them both He created many men and women…)

        [4:1]

Allah also states in the Glorious Qur’an:

(Does man think that he will be left neglected without being punished or rewarded for the obligatory duties enjoined by his Lord (Allah) on him? Was he not a mixed male and female discharge of semen pouring forth? Then he became a clot; then (Allah) shaped and fashioned (him) in due proportion, and made him into two sexes, male and female. Is He not able to raise to life those who are dead?)

        [75:36-40]

Allah illustrated in the verses that He created both sexes from one single source. There is no difference between the two sexes in terms of qualifications in humanity, and each complements the other as the two genders of the species. Islam has abolished and abrogated all the previous unjust laws that demoted women as inferior in quality and nature. The Prophet of Allah (Peace be Upon Him) said:

Verily, women are the twin halves of men.

        [Abu Dawood #234 , Tirmidhi #113 & others

        2) Equality in Religious Obligations
Equal religious duties and rituals are required from both women and men. Testimony of Faith (Shahaadah), Prayer (Salah), Obligatory Charity (Zakah), Fasting (Saum), and Pilgrimage (Hajj) are equally required of both genders. In some cases the requirements are a bit easier on women to alleviate their special cases of hardship. For instance, in consideration of her health and physical condition, menstruating women or a woman in the state of postnatal bleeding and recuperation are absolved from the duty of prayers and fasting. She is required to make up the days of fasting missed due to menses and postnatal bleeding, but not her prayers, as that would be too burdensome.

        3) Equality in Rewards and Punishments
Both males and females have similar rewards for obedience and penalties for disobedience in this world and the Hereafter. As stated by Allah in the Glorious Qur’an:

(Whoever does righteous acts, whether male or female, while he is a believer, verily, to him We will give a good life, and We shall pay them certainly a reward in proportion to the best of what they used to do.)

        [16:97]

And the Lord Most Majestic says:

(Surely for men who submit to Allah and for women who submit to Allah, for believing men and for believing women, for devout men and devout women, for truthful men and truthful women, for steadfast men and steadfast women, for humble men and humble women, for charitable men and charitable women, for fasting men and fasting women, for men who guard their chastity and women who guard their chastity, for men who remember Allah much and for women who remember Allah much, for all of them Allah has prepared forgiveness and a mighty reward.)

        [33:35]

      • Mohammed /

        4) Equality in Preservation of Honor and Nobility
Women have the same moral obligations and are entitled to the same general rights as men in guarding chastity, integrity and personal honor and respect, etc. No double standards are allowed. For instance, those who falsely accuse a chaste woman of adultery or fornication are publicly punished, just as if a man is slandered. Allah, the Exalted, states in the Glorious Qur’an:

(And those who accuse chaste women, and produce not four witnesses, flog them with eighty lashes, and reject their testimony forever. Indeed, they are those who are disobedient to Allah.)

        [24:4]

        5) Equality in Financial Dealings and Property Ownership
Women are equally qualified and allowed to engage in financial dealings and property ownership. According to Islamic law women can own, buy, sell and undertake any financial transaction without the need for guardianship, and without any restrictions or limitations – a situation unheard of in many societies until modern times.

        6) Best of you is the Best to his Womenfolk
Islam indicates that a man who honors, respects and deals with women justly and integrally, possesses a healthy and righteous personality, whereas a man who mistreats them is an unrighteous and unrespectable man. The Prophet of Allah (Peace be Upon Him) said:

The most complete believer is the best in character, and the best of you is the best to his womenfolk.

        [Tirmidhi #1162 and verified]

        7) Equality in Education and Cultivation
Islam entitles women to the same rights as men in terms of education and cultivation. The Prophet of Allah (Peace be Upon Him) said, as reported and authenticated by the scholars of prophetic traditions:

Seeking knowledge is compulsory for each and every Muslim (i.e. both male and female).

[Ibn Majah #224 al-Baihaqi and verified]

Muslim scholars collectively agreed that the word Muslim when used in revealed scriptures includes both male and female, as we indicated in parenthesis. Thus, Islam entitles women to the same right of education in order to understand the religious and social obligations, and obligated them both to raise their children in the best manner, in accordance with the right Islamic guidance. Of course women have certain obligations in bringing up their children that are commensurate to their abilities and men have complementary obligations to finance, protect and maintain according to their added responsibilities in the family unit.

The Prophet (Peace be Upon Him) said:

Whoever takes care of two girls until they reach puberty, he and I will come on the Day of Resurrection like this.” The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) then joined his fingers to illustrate this.

        [Muslim #2631]

About female slave girls, the Prophet of Allah (Peace be Upon Him) said:

Whoever has a female child with him (under his guardianship from slavery), and trains her in the best behavior, and teaches her well, and then frees and marries her, will have a double reward.

        [Bukhari #97 & Muslim #154 ]

        8) Equality in Social Responsiblities
Men and women have similar obligations and responsibilities to reform and correct the society to the best of their capability. Men and women shoulder the responsibility of enjoining good and forbidding evil equally, as Allah, the Exalted, states in the Qur’an:

(The believers, men and women, are helpers, supporters, friends and protectors of one another, they enjoin all that is good, and forbid all that is evil, they offer their prayers perfectly, and give Zakah (Obligatory Charity) and obey Allah and His Messenger. Allah will bestow Mercy on them. Surely Allah is All-Mighty, All-Wise.)

        [9:71]

        9) Right to Receive Fair Share of Wealth
Men and women have set and determined rights to receive their fair share of wealth, just as they are obliged to give Zakah (Obligatory Charity) according to the set calculation. All Muslim scholars unanimously agree upon this. A woman has her set share of inheritance, as will be discussed in more detail later, which was a right unthinkable in many societies.

        Allah (The Almighty) says:

(There is a share for men from what is left by parents and those closely related, and there is a share for women from what is left by parents and those closely related, whether the wealth be small or large: a legal mandatory share.)

        [4:7]

        10) A woman, just like a man, can give someone the right of seeking refuge and security among the Muslims
        Allah, the Exalted, says:

(And if one of the polytheists seeks refuge, give him until he hears the words of Allah, then take him to his place of security.)

The Messenger of Allah (Peace be Upon Him) said:

And the protection of Muslims is one, and the least among them can give protection; and whoever usurps the right of a Muslim then the curse of Allah and His angels and all the people is upon him, and no repentance or ransom will be accepted from him

        [Bukhari #3008]

This is also proven by the famous story of Um Hani’ (Mother of Hani’) when she gave protection to a polytheist who sought refuge with her on the day of the conquest of Makkah after her relative threatened to kill that person (for some past enmity) so the Messenger of Allah (Peace be Upon Him) said,

We protect and give asylum to whomever you give asylum O Um Hani’.

        [Bukhari #350]

These are just some of the rights, mentioned here as examples in a summarized way to indicate the comprehensive nature of the Islamic jurisprudence.

Most absurd!!!! What about the right to have sex with your female slaves. Making them sex slaves. Islam allows sex slaves.

What about divorce, Woman can’t divorce, men can divorce anytime for any reason giving them all the power in marriage

What about the ability for men to hit their women? I know it says only if it’s just, but then it’s up to the man to decide what is just which makes it permissible to hit your woman for practically any reason.

What about women getting nothing in divorce no matter how many years they been married?

What about inheritence. Not only inheritence law mathematically flawed. (Go read it in Quran, most cases the numbers won’t equal 1,) but men get so much more in inheritence

What about the rights of women to show their face and make a reputation for their businesses? How could a woman make a reputation and sell her business if she hides her face? Some Muslims say they must, some say they don’t. It’s because Quran is very clear of course

What about slaves? We going to allow slavery again?

What about killing infedels and non-believers?

Read 9.29 and see what kind of violent and fictional God Allah is.

quote from Quran and give your interpretation as evidence.

who told you woman can’t divorce in Islam where did you pick that up from? Is it from you little book of hatred?

don’t confuse your prejudiced mind with what some radical scholar seeking attention says.

women get to keep their own property in divorce. woman does not have to spend her income on household expenditure she can keep all of it. a man has to provide for the family. some would say that is unfair to man in islam.

only some women choose to cover their face most do not . most scholars also agree that there is no obligation to cover the face. Muslim women can participate in business and work. who told you they can not. don’t use the Saudi monarchs interpretation of islam as a the basis of your argument.

            • skander /

Everybody knows that woman don’t have power of divorce in Islam. The way divorce happens is man says “talek talek talek” That is the only way they divorce and everybody who knows anything about Islam knows this. That is the law in Saudi Arabia, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and even Egypt. That is why in Egyptian movies and shows the angry wife tells her husband “Give me divorce” instead of “I’m divorcing you” which is what they say in American shows. I know either you never watched Arab TV and have no understanding of Islamic society or just lying.
The family structure of man and woman is no longer relevant to society today. Again, freedom on how to run your finances is destroyed by Islam. In the past men only worked and very few woman worked. That was the world of 7th century. Also marriage was not about love as it is today, but more of a business arrangement. That is not Islamic, but the way of the world. It made sense to 7th century people that men are responsible for family expenses, as the woman is responsible for taking care of the home and raising the family. The man takes non of her money and in divorce they each move on with their property. Things are obviously very differently today. Most Tunisians can’t even survive on only the man’s paycheck anymore and the relationship is of love not just business so they pool their money together and pay the bills. Islam is just outdated. As for what the woman has to cover, it shows how stupid Islam really is. The Quran repeats the same things over and over again. Story of Moses is told over 20 times and nothing is added each time. But major debate on what is a woman to cover is talked about only in 24.31 (And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands’ fathers, their sons, their husbands’ sons, their brothers, their brothers’ sons, their sisters’ sons, their women, that which their right hands possess, or those male attendants having no physical desire, or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women. And let them not stamp their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment. And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed.) This quote to me says cover your whole face and even your eyes. You might have a different interpretation, but it shows how even a simple and important thing like this Muslims can’t agree. So in general if you want to believe in fairies and Jinn or whatever make believe creatures you are free to do so, but keep this junk out of politics and the lives of real people.

            • Mohammed /

Skander are you saying Turkey is not democratic?

Oh and stop using Egyptian movies as evidence! LOL

Skander stop being an IGNORANT FOOL go and study Islam before you criticise it.

Islamic jurisprudence permits the wife to have her marriage nullified upon her request if the husband abuses her physically or verbally. She is also entitled to have the marriage nullified for the following general reasons:

if the husband is impotent and cannot perform his marital duties,

or if the husband for any reason, refuses to have sexual relations with his wife and fulfill her lawful needs,

or is afflicted with a disabling terminal illness after the marriage,

or contracts any type of venereal or reproductive disease that may harm the wife or make her lose her desire to be with her husband. Thus, we see that the woman is given the right to seek separation from her husband for legitimate reasons in many situations, exactly as the man has the right to seek divorce. If a wife reaches the extreme limits of patience and abhors her husband, feeling that life is unbearable, then she has the right to divorce. This form of divorce is called annulment, or “Khula”, wherein she pays compensation by returning her dowry or some other property. A competent Muslim judge will look into the individual case if the husband refuses to accept the wife’s request and if the request is considered sound and valid, will pass a judgment in favor of the woman.

As to those women on whose part ye fear disloyalty and ill-conduct, admonish them (first), (Next), refuse to share their beds, (And last) beat them (lightly); but if they return to obedience, seek not against them Means (of annoyance): For God is Most High, great (above you all). Reply to sceptic..apologies for the delay in reply some of us have work to go to and earn a living!

              Qur’an 4:34

The Arabic word used in Noble Verse 4:34 above is “idribuhunna”, which is derived from “daraba” which means “beat”. The issue with all of the Arabic words that are derived from the word “daraba” is that they don’t necessarily mean “hit”. The word “idribuhunna” for instance, could very well mean to “leave” them. It is exactly like telling someone to “beat it” or “drop it” in English.

Allah Almighty used the word “daraba” in Noble Verse 14:24 “Seest thou not how Allah sets (daraba) forth a parable? — A goodly Word Like a goodly tree, Whose root is firmly fixed, And its branches (reach) To the heavens”. “daraba” here meant “give an example”. If I say in Arabic “daraba laka mathal”, it means “give you an example”.

Allah Almighty also used the word “darabtum”, which is derived from the word “daraba” in Noble Verse 4:94, which mean to “go abroad” in the sake of Allah Almighty:

“O ye who believe! When ye go abroad (darabtum) In the cause of Allah, Investigate carefully, And say not to anyone Who offers you a salutation: ‘Thou art none of a Believer!’ Coveting the perishable good Of this life: with Allah Are profits and spoils abundant. Even thus were ye yourselves Before, till Allah conferred On you His favours: therefore Carefully investigate. For Allah is well aware Of all that ye do. (The Noble Quran, 4:94)”

So “daraba” literally means “beat”, or “go abroad”, or “give” but not in the sense to give something by hand, but rather to give or provide an example.

Important Note: Notice how Allah Almighty in Noble Chapter (Surah) 4 He used “daraba (4:34″ and “darabtum (4:94)”, which are both derived from the same root. He used both words in the same Chapter, which tells me that “daraba” in Noble Verse 4:34 means to desert or leave, since that’s what its derived word meant in Noble Verse 4:94. The next section below will further prove my point.

I am sure there are more Noble Verses that used words derived from “daraba” in the Noble Quran, but these are the only ones I know of so far. In the case of Noble Verse 4:34 where Allah Almighty seems to allow men to hit their wives after the two warnings for ill-conduct and disloyalty, it could very well be that Allah Almighty meant to command the Muslims to “leave” the home all together and desert their wives for a long time in a hope that the wives would then come back to their senses and repent.
Noble Verses and Sayings that support the prohibition of any type of wife beating:

The following Noble Verses and Sayings from the Noble Quran and Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him respectively seem to very well support the above interpretation:

“…Do not retain them (i.e., your wives) to harm them…(The Noble Quran, 2:231)”

Narrated Mu’awiyah al-Qushayri: “I went to the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) and asked him: What do you say (command) about our wives? He replied: Give them food what you have for yourself, and clothe them by which you clothe yourself, and do not beat them, and do not revile them. (Sunan Abu-Dawud, Book 11, Marriage (Kitab Al-Nikah), Number 2139)”

Narrated Mu’awiyah ibn Haydah: “I said: Apostle of Allah, how should we approach our wives and how should we leave them? He replied: Approach your tilth when or how you will, give her (your wife) food when you take food, clothe when you clothe yourself, do not revile her face, and do not beat her. (Sunan Abu-Dawud, Book 11, Marriage (Kitab Al-Nikah), Number 2138)”

Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) reported Allah’s Apostle (may peace be upon him) as saying: “He who believes in Allah and the Hereafter, if he witnesses any matter he should talk in good terms about it or keep quiet. Act kindly towards woman, for woman is created from a rib, and the most crooked part of the rib is its top. If you attempt to straighten it, you will break it, and if you leave it, its crookedness will remain there. So act kindly towards women. (Translation of Sahih Muslim, The Book of Marriage (Kitab Al-Nikah), Book 008, Number 3468)”

“O ye who believe! Ye are forbidden to inherit women against their will. Nor should ye treat them with harshness, that ye may take away part of the dower [money given by the husband to the wife for the marriage contract] ye have given them, except where they have been guilty of open lewdness; on the contrary live with them on a footing of kindness and equity. If ye take a dislike to them it may be that ye dislike a thing, and God brings about through it a great deal of good. (The Noble Quran, 4:19)”

“And among God’s signs is this: He created for you mates from amongst yourselves (males as mates for females and vice versa) that you might find tranquillity and peace in them. And he has put love and kindness among you. Herein surely are signs for those who reflect. (The Noble Quran 30:21)”

“Women impure for men impure. And women of purity for men of purity. These are not affected by what people say. For them is forgiveness and an honorable provision. (The Noble Quran 24:26)”

Narrated Abu Huraira: “Allah’s Apostle said, ‘The strong is not the one who overcomes the people by his strength, but the strong is the one who controls himself while in anger. (Translation of Sahih Bukhari, Good Manners and Form (Al-Adab), Volume 8, Book 73, Number 135)”

Narrated Abu Huraira: “A man said to the Prophet , ‘Advise me! ‘The Prophet said, ‘Do not become angry and furious.’ The man asked (the same) again and again, and the Prophet said in each case, ‘Do not become angry and furious.’ (Translation of Sahih Bukhari, Good Manners and Form (Al-Adab), Volume 8, Book 73, Number 137)”

Abu Huraira reported: “I heard Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: One is not strong because of one’s wrestling skillfully. They said: Allah’s Messenger, then who is strong? He said: He who controls his anger when he is in a fit of rage. (Translation of Sahih Muslim, The Book of Virtue, Good Manners and Joining of the Ties of Relationship (Kitab Al-Birr was-Salat-I-wa’l-Adab), Book 032, Number 6314)”

Allah Almighty loves those who restrain anger: “Those who spend (freely), whether in prosperity, or in adversity; who restrain anger, and pardon (all) men; for Allah loves those who do good. (The Noble Quran, 3:134)”

Some info on slaves in Islam

Islam amended and educated the institution of slavery and the attitudes of masters to slaves. The Qur’an taught in many verses that all human beings are descended from a single ancestor, that none has an intrinsic right of superiority over another, whatever his race or his nation or his social standing. And from the Prophet’s teaching, upon him be peace, the Muslims learnt these principles, which they applied both as laws and as social norms:

Whosoever kills his slave: he shall be killed. Whosoever imprisons his slave and starves him, he shall be imprisoned and starved himself, and whosoever castrates his slave shall himself be castrated. (Abu Dawud, Diyat, 70; Tirmidhi, Diyat, 17; Al-Nasa’i, Qasama, 10, 16)

You are sons of Adam and Adam was created from clay. (Tirmidhi, Tafsir, 49; Manaqib, 73; Abu Dawud, Adab, 111)

You should know that no Arab is superior over a non-Arab and, no non-Arab is superior over any Arab, no white is superior over black and no black is superior over white. Superiority is by righteousness and God-fearing [alone]. (Ibn Hanbal, Musnad, 411)

Because of this compassionate attitude, those who had lived their whole lives as slaves and who are described in ahadith as poor and lowly received respect from those who enjoyed high social status (Muslim, Birr, 138; Jannat, 48; Tirmidhi, Manaqib, 54, 65). ‘Umar was expressing his respect in this sense when he said: ‘Master Bilal whom Master Abu Bakr set free’ (Bukhari, Fada’il al-Sahaba, 23). Islam (unlike other civilizations) requires that slaves are thought of and treated as within the framework of universal human brotherhood, and not as outside it. The Prophet, upon him be peace, said:

Your servants and your slaves are your brothers. Anyone who has slaves should give them from what he eats and wears. He should not charge them with work beyond their capabilities. If you must set them to hard work, in any case I advise you to help them. (Bukhari, Iman, 22; Adab, 44; Muslim, Iman, 38–40; Abu Dawud, Adab, 124)

Not one of you should [when introducing someone] say ‘This is my slave’, ‘This is my concubine’. He should call them ‘my daughter’ or ‘my son’ or ‘my brother’.
            (Ibn Hanbal, Musnad, 2, 4)

For this reason ‘Umar and his servant took it in turns to ride on the camel from Madina to Jerusalem on their journey to take control of Masjid al-Aqsa. While he was the head of the state, ‘Uthman had his servant pull his own ears in front of the people since he had pulled his. Abu Dharr, applying the hadith literally, made his servant wear one half of his suit while he himself wore the other half. From these instances, it was being demonstrated to succeeding generations of Muslims, and a pattern of conduct established, that a slave is fully a human being, not different from other people in his need for respect and dignity and justice.

So what exactly do you mean by equality between men and women?

In Islam a woman should be paid the same as a man for the same work being undertaken. In UK today recent survey still shows that women are not paid the same as men for the same work.

So the secular society has failed right? Ah it is evolving another 20 years it will get there right?

Please be specific so far I have heard from you and others wild allegations and lies.

Do not confuse with what Islam says on equality and womens rights and what may or may not be practiced by certain countries and cultures. These are two different things.

I googled about torture in Turkey and it refers to 1970′s .

Is the current Turkish government rounding up political opponents and torturing them?

Rather the so called defenders of secularism had vicious plan to grab power and to stop a islamic leaning party from being in government!

        Ennahada should be very alert.

        • salman /

refrences and sources which are mentioned in wikipedia about torture and human rights, make it clear that torture hasnt stoped in Erdogans regime. on the contary: “… instances of torture seem to be on the rise since 2005″. altough islamists and pan turkists have their own differences, both of them have oppressed people of Turkey especially kurds. same thing is true about so called Reformists and hard liners in Iran. all of them are corrupt and criminals. their are just using religion or nationalism in favor of their own interests.

England and other countries are capitalist before being secular. its not secularism which creates inequality, its capitalism which does it. islamists are supporting capitalism. in countries with islamic regimes men and women are not paid the same wage for similar labour. look at Iran or Arabia. women have more rights in secular countries than countries like Iran or Arabia. in England workers have gained the right to organize in trade unions and struggle for better conditions. in Iran or Arabia trade unions are banned and workers might be sent to prison because of protesting.

          • Mohammed /

you have to better than that. How about a link to the sources.

neither iran and saudi arabia are applying sharia correctly. Saudi is a monarchy and iran a republic. Having said that you are not being specific. You are generalising. It is like if I was to say ALL christians abuse children on the basis of a few guilty priests. It is wrong. there are good and bad in every society, religion and race.

scaremongering will not achieve anything. Ennahad have got the most seats. they will need to form a coalition.

All politicians must be held accountable. no intimidation will be allowed.

three sentances to show why Islamist should never have power.

Slavery is bad and no longer allowed in civillized society. The reason is no one wants to be a slave, therefore making other people slaves is bad.

Islam not only allows slavery, it fails to abolish it. Yes, it allows some people to be freed, but all slave societies free some slaves from time to time. That’s to give slaves hope of being free and less likely to rise up and kill their masters. Due to slavery being allowed in Sharia law, it’s no longer relevant to society

Due to Sharia law no longer relevant to modern day society, should no longer be taken seriously. 90% of people think slavery is evil and so is pedophillia, yet Quran says it’s not, therefore people in modern day society will not accapt true Sharia as God’s law. Therefore lets grow up and stop using Islam for politics.

        • Nostrom /

Hello…Are you blind or what? Show me how many muslims these days that have female slave in their house? Show statistics in German, Arab countries, Australia, India, Malaysia, Japan, north pole. Where in the world you get that figure? Don’t mistake a nanny or female housekeeper as a slave…show me one real slave in a muslim house. If you don’t find one, just shut up.

There are laws in the Quran that transcend long time, beyond our lifetime. In current modern day context, I myself do not see how a slave would fit in this modern day. But, who am I to question God’s wisdom. I don’t reject what is clearly stated. May be there will be a situation in the future like thousand years ago where slavery is a must, not a choice. Our wisdom is limited.

          Cheers, from .au

          Dear Brother
I am sure that you are misguided by Islamophobis and all your posts are only because of this. Did you know that sharia laws are not created by muhammed but it is from the GOD, the ultimate creater, created you me and all in the world and he know future past and all, you know one thing that while prophet muhammed coming to the Arabian society, the society and their economy is greatly depented on slavery. God clearly know that if he stop this system suddenly it will greatly affect them so he planned the gredual reduction of this system and now it is no more now in any Islamic society, Prophet and Islam contributed greatly for this removal of slavery by giving great importance for releasing the slaves and in sharia there are some rules which showing that forgivness for some faults or sins only free a slave and by cleverly islam destroyed that slavery. One most important thing is that the first followers of islam are slaves, if you study about Islam or prophet’s history you can clearly uderstand that Bilal’s (he is a slave)importance in muslim society. If islam stopped slavery like Abraham lincoln done it will affect the society.Think by using your brain why Islam got follewers from the slaves.

In the former times, when a war broke out between two tribes or nations, usually, one of them totally wiped out the other in the clashes. Most of the men were killed during the fight, as there were no regular standing armies and adult men from each family were expected to participate from their respective sides. The cities, villages and other dwellings of the enemy were razed to the ground.

Islam forbids the Muslims from slaying women, children and religious people of the opponents, as long as they don’t try to participate in the battle and hurt them.

When the Muslims were victorious in wars during the Prophet (P.B.U.H)’s time and the enemy was overpowered, the supervision of the conquered lands fell into their hands. The complicated question of the hundreds of widowed women and children arose. Obviously, they couldn’t be left on their own to starve to death with no provider. The solution to this problem was to distribute them as seemed best among the Muslims, according to their social ranks so that they would be provided for. This was done.

The next problem presented itself. These women lived in their houses and they provided for them, so what would be their status? That of their wives? Or would they be considered their daughters? Or sisters? That’s ridiculous! Would all the Muslims be required to marry their war captives? (Muhammad P.B.U.H set a fine example by doing this, and encouraged it among His followers, promising them a heavenly reward if they educated the slave girls, freed them and married them, but it was illogical to make it compulsory). Of course, the solution was to allow the men to to be intimate with their war captives whom they were responsible for. Better than the gruesome treatment other nations (even today) mete out to the women of subjugated lands, huh?

Certain strict rules were set for the Muslims with respect to their slave men and women.

If a man had a child through his slave woman, he could not sell that slave woman, since she became the mother of his child. After the man’s death, she would be a free woman. The child was his legally, and inherited an equal share of his father’s property as the other children.

A companion of Muhammad (P.B.U.H) insulted his slave, calling him the son of a black woman. Muhammad (P.B.U.H) heard this, and exclaimed:”O Abu Zar! u insult him on account of his mother? u have done something which exhibits ur ignorance! They are ur brothers, u have them under ur control, and whoever has his brother under his control should feed him with what he eats himself, should clothe him with what he wears himself, and should not order him to execute a difficult task, and if he assigns such a task to him, he himself should help him accomplish it.”

A companion of Muhammad (P.B.U.H) slapped his slave in a state of fury. Seeing the signs of anger on Muhammad (P.B.U.H)’s face, the companion became frightened and said: “O Prophet of Allah! I free him for Allah’s sake.” He (P.B.U.H) declared: If u hadn’t done that, u would have been burned in hell fire”

Islam didn’t abolish slavery at once since it was not feasible due to several reasons (including the economic and social structue). But freeing the slaves who could become independent was made the expiation of several sins. Great rewards were promised to those who freed their slaves. The captivation of male and female war captives was continued till the caliphate of Umar (P.B.U.H), one of the closest companions of Muhammad (P.B.U.H) during His life. When the standing armies were established, and the war captives remained a problem no longer, the tradition of war captives was totally abolished.

The bottom line is: the Muslim world in general was cleared of slavery centuries before the other civilized nations!

A bit of free advice for CPR, given that they’re likely to become Ennahda’s junior coalition partner: look to the Liberal Democrats in the UK as an example of what NOT to do.

Yet, the Islamists were the choice of the majority of the Tunisian people…Why?

        I’ll tell you why:

The secularists like you are hate monger, becoming more extremist. You believe in the politics of exclusion. Suppress people who disagree with you.

The Islamists nowaday have become more moderate. They now believe in the politics of inclusion. They try to get everyone, including, the secularists, involve in the advancement of their country, together.

So, in short, if you still don’t understand: Secularists has become more extremist, the Islamist has become more moderate. So, better choose the Islamists. Period.

What does “moderate Islamist” mean? It means someone who does not follow the more extreme violent and backward laws of the Quran. And those people are people who are nothing but hypocrites. Also, you are lying about secularists being extreme. We are not telling anyone to no longer pray or do their stupid 7th century pagan rituals. They are free to do whatever they want. Just laws have no Islam base and that’s not extreme but common sense that should not even be debated. We don’t have slavery or pedophilia and now we know women need rights in divorce and not just have all power with the husband. Also we are not stupid, anytime Islamists have power they use it for evil and supreme power. Look at Iran, once the Islamists started killing 16 year old girls. See Afghanistan, Pakistan, etc. Never did Islamists get in power and have a Democratic government. That’s impossible. Moderate Muslim is just a hypocrite using Islam for political power. Tunisians won’t vote for an extremist, they are hypocrites who like only parts of Islam, so they vote for moderate Islamist party.

            • Skeptic /

I won’t defend banning the hijab, but niqab is another matter. It does not allow others to see a woman’s face. If you can’t see her face, you can’t verify her identity, let alone know that she’s not a man. A male suicide bomber, I mean, shahid, can easily use one to do his dirty deed.

BTW, Western countries frequently have laws against wearing masks in public for a similar reason. Criminals often cover their faces to prevent identification.

            • Mohammed /

No Skander the muslim women who were Niqab have never refused to show their face in the bank to a bus driver or police.

People in winter cover their face are they going to be banned too! We know the real agenda behind this law!

A male suicide bomber wearing a Niqab is more likely to stand out!

Here he lays down the rule that it is to be extorted by force: “If they refuse to accept Islam, demand from them the Jizya. If they agree to pay, accept it from them and hold off your hands. If they fefuse to pay the tax, seek Allah’s help and fight them”

Bukhari (53:386) – The command for Muslims to spread Islamic rule by force, subjugating others until they either convert to Islam or pay money, is eternal: Our Prophet, the Messenger of our Lord, has ordered us to fight you till you worship Allah Alone or give Jizya (i.e. tribute); and our Prophet has informed us that our Lord says:– “Whoever amongst us is killed (i.e. martyred), shall go to Paradise to lead such a luxurious life as he has never seen, and whoever amongst us remain alive, shall become your master.” This is being recounted during the reign of Umar, Muhammad’s companion and the second caliph who sent conquering armies into non-Muslim Persian and Christian lands (after Muhammad’s death).

Ishaq 956 & 962 – “He who withholds the Jizya is an enemy of Allah and His apostle.” The words of Muhammad.

        • Skeptic /

Yes, but we call it an “income tax,” and it has no religious implications. We have other taxes, too. They vary by country and are subject to constant discussion, research and debate. (We infidels like to use our brains. Why else did God give them to us?) Many countries have welfare systems, for which part of zakat is devoted. The rest of zakat is for jihad. While jihad’s base meaning is “struggle”, in the Qur’an it always means, “holy war.”

I should mention that, in democracies, we pay taxes and do not feel subdued, unlike jizya payers.

Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., Chief Justice of the United States, was asked, “Don’t you hate to pay taxes?” He replied, “No, young fellow, I like paying taxes, with them I buy civilization.”

          • skander /

Also, other than the taxes we are forced to pay. Infidels pay a lot into charity. It’s important to note how much infidel money countries like Pakistan and Bangladesh get when they have a disaster. Infidels give Muslims more money in charity than Muslims give themselves. Atheists also give a lot of charity and some dedicate their whole lives to helping people. Most those doctors without borders helping Muslims in Afghanistan are Atheists. Quran is a lie, it says Muslims are good people and others are wicked. We all know it’s a lie and time to put the book in the library sectioned as “Fiction”

            • Skeptic /

              @skander

I don’t know why you’re so upset. The Muslims are just collecting jizya by other means. (I’d put a wink emoticon if I weren’t so disgusted.)

              @Mohammed, the quiet

Quran 2:43, 83, 103, the only mentions of zakat, all say “give zakat” (or some variation thereof). Therefore, zakat is supposed to be voluntary. Historically, when Muslims conquered a land, they were the minority and supported themselves with jizya. After enough infidels became Muslim, jizya revenues fell too low to sustain the Muslim regime. In response, zakat became mandatory and set to 1/5 of a Muslim’s income. Why 1/5? That was Muhammad’s share of the booty that he and his followers stole from infidels. Of course, Muslims don’t consider theft from infidels to truly be theft.

            • Mohammed /

Skander you are losing it! Confusing the issue between secularism and Islam and talking about infidels giving to charity!

Muslims do not hate non believers it is the anti Islamic propaganda of the west. Like Hollywood presented the native American Indians as the aggressor and the cowboys(the real aggressors) as the victims.

Don’t confuse between a loan with conditions and exorbitant interests and AID. Most of the western governments refer to aid really mean a loan with many conditions. The Greeks are finding out at the moment where all the bailout money goes straight off to pay the interest!

          • Mohammed /

I asked about non muslims living under an Islamic State if they were required to pay zakat? The answer is NO.

Muslims living in non muslim countries are paying taxes.

            Below taken from Wikipedia

Under Islamic law, jizya or jizyah (Arabic: ????? ?izyah IPA: [d?izja]; Ottoman Turkish: cizye; both derived from Pahlavi and possibly from Aramaic gaziyat[1]) is a per capita tax levied on a section of an Islamic state’s non-Muslim citizens, who meet certain criteria. The tax is/was to be levied on able bodied adult males of military age and affording power,[2] (but with specific exemptions,[3][4] From the point of view of the Muslim rulers, jizya was a material proof of the non-Muslims’ acceptance of subjection to the state and its laws, “just as for the inhabitants it was a concrete continuation of the taxes paid to earlier regimes.”[5] In return, non-Muslim citizens were permitted to practice their faith, to enjoy a measure of communal autonomy, to be entitled to Muslim state’s protection from outside aggression, to be exempted from military service and the zakat taxes obligatory upon Muslim citizens

So as you see the non muslims have to pay tax just as muslims living in the west have to pay tax.

Dealing with Qur’an 9:5, hope you hate filled heart can cope!

9:5 Kill the disbelievers wherever you find them.

This verse, often called “the verse of the sword”, has been misquoted in a manner similar to the previous verses. First, we shall provide the verse in its context:

9:5-6 But when the forbidden months are past, then fight and slay the Pagans wherever ye find them, an seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem (of war); but if they repent, and establish regular prayers and practise regular charity, then open the way for them: for Allah is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful. If one amongst the Pagans ask thee for asylum, grant it to him, so that he may hear the word of Allah. and then escort him to where he can be secure. That is because they are men without knowledge.

Having presented the verse in context, we can analyze it properly. Dr. Maher Hathout gives an explanation on the historical context of the verse:

This verse was revealed towards the end of the revelation period and relates to a limited context. Hostilities were frozen for a three-month period during which the Arabs pledged not to wage war. Prophet Muhammad was inspired to use this period to encourage the combatants to join the Muslim ranks or, if they chose, to leave the area that was under Muslims rule; however, if they were to resume hostilities, then the Muslims would fight back until victorious. One is inspired to note that even in this context of war, the verse concludes by emphasizing the divine attributes of mercy and forgiveness. To minimize hostilities, the Qur’an ordered Muslims to grant asylum to anyone, even an enemy, who sought refuge. Asylum would be granted according to the customs of chivalry; the person would be told the message of the Qur’an but not coerced into accepting that message. Thereafter, he or she would be escorted to safety regardless of his or her religion. (9:6). (Hathout, Jihad vs. Terrorism; US Multimedia Vera International, 2002, pp.52-53, emphasis added)

Therefore, this verse once again refers to those pagans who would continue to fight after the period of peace. It clearly commands the Muslims to protect those who seek peace and are non-combatants. It is a specific verse with a specific ruling and can in no way be applied to general situations. The command of the verse was only to be applied in the event of a battle. As Abdullah Yusuf Ali writes:

The emphasis is on the first clause: it is only when the four months of grace are past, and the other party show no sign of desisting from their treacherous design by right conduct, that the state of war supervenes – between Faith and Unfaith. (Yusuf Ali, The Holy Qur’an, Text, Translation and Commentary, emphasis added)

If the pagans would not cease their hostilities towards the Muslims, then they were to be fought, especially since they were living in the land of an Islamic state. Dr. Zakir Naik writes concerning this verse:

This verse is quoted during a battle. …We know that America was once at war with Vietnam. Suppose the President of America or the General of the American Army told the American soldiers during the war: “Wherever you find the Vietnamese, kill them”. Today if I say that the American President said, “Wherever you find Vietnamese, kill them” without giving the context, I will make him sound like a butcher. But if I quote him in context, that he said it during a war, it will sound very logical, as he was trying to boost the morale of the American soldiers during the war. …Similarly in Surah Taubah chapter 9 verse 5 the Qur’an says, “Kill the Mushriqs (pagans) where ever you find them”, during a battle to boost the morale of the Muslim soldiers. What the Qur’an is telling Muslim soldiers is, don’t be afraid during battle; wherever you find the enemies kill them. Surah Taubah chapter 9 verse 6 gives the answer to the allegation that Islam promotes violence, brutality and bloodshed. It says:

“If one amongst the Pagans ask thee for asylum, grant it to him, so that he may hear the word of Allah; and then escort him to where he can be secure that is because they are men without knowledge.” [Al-Qur’an 9:6]

The Qur’an not only says that a Mushriq seeking asylum during the battle should be granted refuge, but also that he should be escorted to a secure place. In the present international scenario, even a kind, peace-loving army General, during a battle, may let the enemy soldiers go free, if they want peace. But which army General will ever tell his soldiers, that if the enemy soldiers want peace during a battle, don’t just let them go free, but also escort them to a place of security? This is exactly what Allah (swt) says in the Glorious Qur’an to promote peace in the world. (SOURCE, emphasis added)

Dr. Naik makes some very interesting observations about the verse. Indeed, it is truly amazing how Islam-haters will ignore God’s infinite mercy in their attempt to malign Islam. God has always given human beings a way out of any suffering, and has only ordained fighting as a last resort. Muslim scholars have written much commentary on these Qur’anic verses explaining the historical context in such great detail so that there may be no misconceptions. We have quoted extensively from various commentators on these verses and there is no need to repeat the same material again. We will provide one more commentary before moving on. Professor Shahul Hameed writes on verse 9:5:
This is a verse taken from Surah At-Tawba. This chapter of the Qur’an was revealed in the context when the newly organized Muslim society in Madinah was engaged in defending themselves against the pagan aggressors. The major question dealt with here is, as to how the Muslims should treat those who break an existing treaty at will. The first clause in the verse refers to the time-honored Arab custom of a period of warning and waiting given to the offenders, after a clear violation. That is, they will be given four months’ time to repair the damage done or make peace. But if nothing happens after the expiry of these forbidden months, what should be done? This is what the present verse says. According to this verse, fighting must be resumed until one of the two things happens: Either the enemy should be vanquished by relentless fighting. That is what is meant by {then fight and slay the pagans wherever ye find them, and seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem [of war]}; or they should repent, establish prayers and pay zakah, etc. This is one of those verses of the Qur’an which are likely to be misunderstood, if quoted out of context. We must understand that this fighting was against a people who forced the Prophet and his companions to leave not only their own homes but all their property and even their hometown of Makkah to Madinah. Once the Muslims were organized into a community in those lawless times, the rules to be followed by the Muslims were clearly laid down, even in the matter of war. Since Islam is a comprehensive system, no human activity could be ignored. And given the nature of mankind, we cannot imagine a situation where fighting is completely ruled out either. As can be seen, the above injunctions on fighting is not on an individual level, but only in the case of a society that strives to flourish and thrive as a nation. But even here the norms are clear: fighting is only in self defence or for the establishment of justice; and always fighting is the last option. And no one is allowed to transgress the limits set by God. (SOURCE, emphasis added)

Ibn al-`Arabi, in his commentary on the Qur’an, writes:

“It is clear from this that the meaning of this verse is to kill the pagans who are waging war against you.” (Ahkam al-Qur’an: 2/456, emphasis added)
Shaykh Sami al-Majid also makes some very interesting points in his discussion on this verse:

If we look at the verses in Sûrah al-Tawbah immediately before and after the one under discussion, the context of the verse becomes clear. A few verses before the one we are discussing, Allah says:

“There is a declaration of immunity from Allah and His Messenger to those of the pagans with whom you have contracted mutual alliances. Go then, for four months, to and fro throughout the land. But know that you cannot frustrate Allah that Allah will cover with shame those who reject Him.” [Sûrah al-Tawbah: 1-2]

In these verses we see that the pagans were granted a four month amnesty with an indication that when the four months were over, fighting would resume. However, a following verse exempts some of them from the resumption of hostilities. It reads:

“Except for those pagans with whom you have entered into a covenant and who then do not break their covenant at all nor aided anyone against you. So fulfill your engagements with them until the end of their term, for Allah loves the righteous.” [Sûrah al-Tawbah: 4]

So when Allah says: “But when the forbidden months are past, then fight the pagans wherever you find them, and seize them and beleaguer them and lie in wait for them in every stratagem (of war)” we must know that it is not general, since the verse above has qualified it to refer to the pagan Arabs who were actually at war with the Prophet (peace be upon him) and those who broke their covenants of peace. This is further emphasized a few verses later where Allah says:

“Will you not fight people who broke their covenants and plotted to expel the Messenger and attacked you first?” [Sûrah al-Tawbah: 13] (SOURCE)

Therefore, the context of the verse within the Surah makes it clear that this refers to those who are persistent in their hostilities and attacks against Muslims, and it is applied in battle only. We recommend that one reads Shaykh Sami Al-Majid’s full article entitled There is no Compulsion in Religion.

i congratulate to Ennahda party for its victory in tunisia election…i am a proud Muslim from pakistan. the victory speaks itself for those ignorant people like sikanderz that Islam is not only the fastest growing religion, but the only solution for the deprived people of world, with its economic, social, democratic, and justice system. Long live Islam, followers of Islam

      • skander /

Being a fastest growing religion is not something to be proud of. It’s because Muslims are in poor areas and they get a lot of children. Islam is growing through the creating of children, not conversion of persons. For most of the last one thousand years Christianity was the fastest growing religion in the world does it mean it was correct? Islam HAS 0 DEMOCRATIC SYSTEM YOU ARE AN IGNORANT LIAR AND A MORON. As for justice it’s the justice of 7th Century Arabia not modern day world. Economics have very little to do with religion, see how Western world evolved well without Islam. And see what Islam did to Afghanistan, Sudan, Algeria, Iran, Syria, etc. all backwaters due mostly due to Islam. And you are a moron from Pakistan in a country which Islam is destroying yet you are so brainwashed that you don’t even see it. You were brainwashed as a child and made into a brainless sheep. Quran says world is flat and sun goes around the Earth and you stupid people still believe it’s the word of God. If you were born a few thousand miles East you would have been a Hindu, but your brainwashed brain won’t allow you to see that obvious fact. Islam has been in the middle east for 1,400 years and it’s still a backwater, only when secular government run things there is any progress at all. For God’s sake, world civilization has been around for 10,000 years and NO ONE BELIEVED IN ALLAH, yet 1,400 years ago Allah finally decides to come from hiding by talking to a pedophile who has sex slaves and 11 wives and kills people who don’t agree with him? Only the most brainless zombie could believe such stupid stories.

        • Nostrom /

          0. Hi @skander. From your mumbling about Islam, I see your knowledge and IQ with regard to Islamic view is so low and filled with noise from people who hate Islam. Better fix it soon, or else you’ll remain confused.

          1. If more and more people is accepting Islam as a way of live hurts your feeling, we understood that. Be cool ok. Just, don’t be the last person to accept Islam as a way of life.

          2. During the time of Umar Abdul Aziz, it was difficult to find poor people to distribute zakat (national income). How about today, in this modern day? How about Tunisia which was run under a secular system for decades…how many people are poor and homeless? What modern economy are you talking about, or proud about? Bottom line, if you are rich, that doesn’t make you right/correct either.

          3. Economics have very very much to do with religion/your way of life, see how past Islamic world evolved well without secularism. We were prosperous and peaceful. Then came the Western world with secularism dominated and forcing new way of live on Muslim. We were probably prosperous but not really peaceful. We hate each other. We bully each other. Prostitution, Divorce, Chile abuse, Killing wife and husband, students hit or kill teachers, Abortion, throwing babies in garbage cans, unfair distribution of wealth. These are new advanced products from the sure fail Western system. Nowadays, we are not even prosperous and peaceful. For your information, those muslim countries you mentioned are not governed by moderate Islamists.

          4. You were brainwashed as a child and made into a brainless sheep. That phrase “the world is flat” taken from the quran has incomplete translation. People of knowledge has discussed about that sentence. It was unanimously agreed that it was uttered in the context of the human eye/perspective, and it does not reject the fact that the earth surround the sun. Consider this: you didn’t get the “actual/right” perspective over Islam because you only see Islam from your eye/perspective. You thought Islam is “flat”. You wish Islam to be flat. You tell everyone “Islam is flat”. I’d like to invite you go to the mosque or meet Islamic scholars and get clear view about Islam, else you will always believe that “Islam is flat.” Your enemy is your ignorance and not willing to learn.

          5. For God’s sake, world civilization has been around for more than 10,000 years and THERE WERE PEOPLE WHO BELIEVED IN ALLAH. Don’t tell me you believe that we are cousins of monkey (as Mr. Darwin said) or people were naked and have no house, no fun. Those are bullshits. We are descendant of Adams and Eves, not monkey – you can ask Jews or Christians who practices torah and bible. May be it would be helpful for you to think Adams and Eves used to wear high tech clothing in the heaven. Allah taught him and her many thing to live in a civilized way on Earth. Since Adam, there were 100 thousands of prophets and messenger sent to teach their generation about Islamic system. The history of Islam is longer than the history of Secularism. Secularism is immature, weak and is no good for peaceful life. However, if Secularists still want to live the way they want, Islam allows that. No compulsion to accept Islam as a way of life. Moderate Islamists will give democratic rights to all its citizen, including Secularists.

          Cheers.

          • skander /

It’s so sad that Islam has made you so stupid.

Your knowledge of history is pathetic, which isto be expected from Muslims. There were poor people in the “Golden Age” of Islam and even under Umar Abdul Aziz. Were the slaves also happy during the “golden age”? I’m not brainless sheep. I was Muslim, used my brain found it stupid. Quran does say world is flat. Allah spread the world like a carpet. I know you know that. Carpets are spread flat on the floor. So either God is saying the world is flat or the world’s worst metaphor maker. Plus it’s written by God, don’t you think God would be smarter than that? Why didn’t God just correctly say the shape of the Earth and not make stupid metaphors that we would later make fun of or “misunderstand” I could have wrote better metaphors therefore it’s not perfect and not from God. You see, your problem is when you read from the Quran you treat God like a 5 year old monkey, while you should only be expecting the best, but instead you make excuses for the non stop stupidity. Adam and Eve is a myth you stupid moron. 99% of scientists believe in evolution, IT’S BEEN PROVEN BEYOND A DOUBT YOU STUPID MORON!!!!! IT’S PROVEN IN GENETICS AND IT’S PROVEN IN FOSSIL RECORDS. What the HELL DO THINK THINK ALL THOSE HUMANOID FOSSILS ARE? AND WHO BELIEVED IN ALLAH 10,000 YEARS AGO?? Where are their Mosques or Churches or Temples? Where is the proof? YOU HAVE NO DAMN PROOF. YOU JUST WANT TO BELIEVE IT’S TRUE. ANCIENT EGYPTIANS, BABYLONIANS, INDIANS, CHINESE, JAPANESE, AUSTRALIANS, NATIVE AMERICANS, ALL DID NOT BELIEVE IN ALLAH. 3,000 BC, there are civilizations everywhere and none of them believed in Allah. 2,000 BC. NO ALLAH. 1,000 BC. Only a very small and insignificant tribe of people who live in Israel believed in a different version of ALLAH. In 1 AD, only a very small group of people believed in a different version of Allah. According to Islam, Jesus comes but messes up the message which shows how good a God Allah is who can’t send a simple message despite the fact Ancient Egyptian Gods had temples which still has their scripture from thousands of years ago. Finally, in 600 AD God finally comes to life and people start believing in Allah, because this one man who talks to angels and screws a 9 year old. Your story only the brainless can believe. READ THE QURAN, BUT NOT LIKE A BELIEVER BUT A RESEARCHER AND YOU WILL SEE HOW STUPID THE BOOK REALLY IS.

            • Nostrom /

              1. Ha ha Skander. Nice talking to you. You got messed up because you read the quran not as a believer but as a researcher with the intention to find any “possibly looking good” flaws that can be use to demote Islam. That wont make you a good researcher. I’m only part time commentator. I hope with our brief encounter, you and I get benefits from each other.

              2. Regarding the Theory of Evolution, it is just a theory. When something is classified as a theory, it can be true or false. The public and ministers in the west and east are still debating whether its true or not. Some have remove it from their public schools’ textbooks (in USA). Do your research. Your 99% is wrong.

              3. Who said all of the ancient egyptians, babylonians…, ALL did not believe in Allah? at any point of time in human history, there will always be believers and non believers. I have no problem with that. The believers are only responsible to give the truth, the reminders. Allah is the one who will choose to give hidayah/lights/understanding to whomever he wish. If you don’t want to be a believer, that’s fine. The only problem with that is when you were already under the sands (i.e. dead in the coffin). What if the Quran is true? What if Allah is there watching you now and then?

              4. This is what I think. If you want to get more balanced view about Islam, the best way is not to learn or understand it from books or Internet. Find a living mukmin – someone who is knowledgeable about Islam and practicing it in their daily life. In fact, find a few of them – a university professor, a doctor, an ulamak, a taxi driver, a police, a law maker, a fisherman, etc. ASK them about Islam and evaluates their views objectively. Furthermore, I think you have been very close to anti-Islamic sources/person. That is good. Now why not get close to the pro-Islam/moderate Islam sources/person. Similar to believers in democracy and secularist, you will find many different flavors of Islamic practice. As a start, why not get to know those moderate Ennahda, since they are the most hateful to you. I meant meet them physically, not by hearing about them from you friends or foe. The American, the kufr has the heart to meet Ennahda, why not you? Call their headquarter, meet their president or find local leaders of Ennahda. After meeting them many times, you still have your freedom of choice.

              Cheers.

Skander calm down I know you are upset because I exposed your lies where you quote verses out of context and outright LIE to fulfill your islam hate agenda!

So now you agree a muslim woman has the right to divorce her husband.

Now as for the existence of a creator there are just as many if not more scientists who believe in a creator. Granted the other side of the argument would be who created the creator but one thing scientists can never explain is how was the first atom created when, where and how. Evolution comes after this question of the first atom is addressed. I believe a creator had to create the first atom.

Go to the Science Museum or Maritime Museum and you will find contributions of muslims during the Islamic Calipahte. The acedemics acknowledge although certain people want to deny the GREAT contributions made by m,uslims doctors, engineers, scientists, artists etc. during when the Islamic State was in existence.

            • Mohammed /

In 1492, Christopher Columbus set sail on three small ships from Spain with a Muslim navigator (a person who has skills in getting from place to place), an Arab translator, maps, and equipment.
So muslim navigators where instrumental in columbuses exploration of the americaas. The christian conquest of spain gave christians access to a wealth of muslim skill and knowledge. Knowledge that would eventually lead them out of the dark ages!

        • Mohammed /

Skander you fool Islam is growing because of conversion. Even in the USA since 9/11 thousands have embraced Islam despite the anti Muslim propaganda.

So stop and think before you type nonsense!

          • skander /

There is not much more Islam conversion than conversions to Mormonism and Scientology. 95% of Islamic growth is births, and the small conversions actually is from Africa. Most converts in America actually live in prison. How many scientists convert to Islam? less than you can count on your fingers. And all that does not even matter. There is 0 proof for Islam. zero, nothing, just faith in a pedophile prophet who murdered and raped like a wild beast. There is no more proof in joseph Smith of the Mormons than Mohamed. I do not care if you believe in pedophile prophets, I do care if you try to make the laws of that crazy moron the laws of a country.

    49. Skeptic /

      @khan 4m

You said, “I am a proud Muslim from Pakistan.”

Yes, you must be proud of how violent your country is with political, religious and ethnic factions all killing each other and anyone who gets caught in the crossfire. You must be proud that your government doesn’t control all of its territory. You must be proud that East Pakistan (i.e., Bangladesh) seceded and that your government declared the secessionists infidels to justify raping and murdering them. You must be proud that wanting to change a law like the blasphemy law is grounds for justifiable homicide. You must be proud that your country has failed to establish democracy like Tunisia is doing.

You must find infidel India disgusting. Other than religion, India is culturally similar to Pakistan. It has a functioning democracy, a fast-growing economy, rising wages and freedom. India is not perfect: many Indians have been speaking about its imperfections since independence. They do so without fear that they’ll be persecuted for stating an opinion. In fact, Indians’ freedom is the reason that India can improve. Indians can say what’s wrong, propose solutions and implement them. I can’t think of a more disgusting, filthy, murderous lot than those infidels, except for Pakistanis, etc.

      • Mohammed /

Skeptic you must be proud how the secular democracy chose to kill more than a million Iraqis. How they exploit the poor farmers of the developing African nations. How they are hypocrites pretending to want democracy but all the time propping up kings and dictators as long as they BENEFIT!

Don’t forget Ben Ali, Gaddafi, Mubarak, Saleh etc are/were supported by the so called secular countries such as USA, UK and France.

    50. salman /

it is not the “secular democracy” which is killing people or exloiting them. secular democracy is a great achivement of mankind. it is capitalism which exploits people, starts wars, supports dictators and …
are islamists struggling against capitalism? NO. then there is no reason to belive they are better or more Humanitarian than rulers of “secular countries” (as you call them).
islamist regimes support dictatorships as well, for example: islamic republic of Iran supports Syrian regime. of course, its not because of islam, their interests at the moment dictates this policy. you seem to be supporting the fascist regime of Turkey yourself! altough i dont know your reason.
some corrupt and opportunist politicians are using religion to deceive people. in europe and USA rightist extremists are using religion too. dont let them to misuse you so easily. you see nothing but religion. if you want to know the truth, study their political, economical and social program instead of their religious propaganda.
