25 Hostages in Tazarka’s ENI Oil Refinery
A persitent sit-in has been ongoing since last Friday, October 21st in front of the oil refinery center in Tazarka, Nabeul. The crowd paralyzed the activities of the firm, which belongs to Italian company ENI in cooperation with ETAP (Entreprise Tunisienne d’Activités Pétrolières). There is no apparent solution in sight.
On last Wednesday, October 26th, the Ministry of Industry and Technology issued a press release saying, “25 people are trapped by demonstrations surrounding the oil refinery center in Tazarka from last October 21th. …The offenders’ demands are not unionist or related to the activities of the refinery, they are, rather, demanding subsidies of a diverse nature. …The secluded staff was deprived from food and medicines and the situation worsened today –October 26th- as three people were evacuated in critical condition.”
The Ministry indicated that many parties stepped in to argue with the protestors and find an agreement. Consequently, a working meeting was scheduled for today between representatives from ENI, officials from the ministry and local authorities in Tazarka.
Le Temps’ newspaper reported Ridha Ben Salah’s opinion –chairman of the council of protection of the revolution in Tazarka-: “We are demanding the recruitment of 100 people in the firm as laborers, managerial staff and engineers, support for 30 local families in need by three thousand dinars per year, and a budget of 170,000 dinars to meet the needs of athletic and humanitarian-oriented associations.”
