Ennahda Secretary General Hamadi Jebali said that all women, including single mothers will be protected under the law in Tunisia, although he did not outright refute controversial remarks made by prominent Ennahda Constituent Assembly member, Souad Abderrahim on Radio Monte Carlo.

“I have not heard the comments of Souad Abderrahim,” said Jebali, “However, Ennahda does not reject any part of Tunisian society including single mothers. We believe that single mothers should be treated equally like all Tunisian citizens.”  He stressed that “improving the status of women in Tunisia is a central part of Ennahda’s plans.”

Comments made by Souad Abderrahim on Radio Monte Carlo caused a stir in Tunisian social media when she said that “single mothers are a disgrace to Tunisian society” and that “they do not have the right to exist.”

When reached by Tunisia Live, Souad Abderrahim said that the issue of single mothers “is disturbing and not something people want to hear about.” She added that people who are attacking her on Facebook by spreading the radio interview are attempting to distract public attention from more important issues.

Jebali has been designated as the candidate for Tunisia’s Prime Minister in the interim government during the Constituent Assembly by the Ennahda Party.
