Hechmi Hamdi, leader of the independent list Aridha Chaabia, called ex-members of deposed leader Ben Ali’s dissolved RCD party to join his cause for the next general elections in an interview with Express FM, a Tunisian private radio station.

“RCDists, I’m asking you from Express FM, you can rely on Al Aridha, you are welcome and next time give us your votes,” declared the leader during the interview.

Hamdi highlighted the historical participation of Destourians in building Tunisia and the role they played in the country’s liberation from the colonial rule, referring to The Constitutional Liberal Party, the anti-colonial Tunisian political party which eventually became the RCD.

Hamdi, who had decided a few days ago to suspend his political activity, said that the suspension does not mean retirement from political life and that he is preparing his campaign for the forthcoming elections.

Hamdi went on to add that his only goal is to serve Tunisia.  He also deplored the exclusion of his list by the Tunisian media and the political troika in power namely, Ennahda, the Congress for the Republic, and Ettakatol.

Aridha Chaabia is the independent list of candidates that shocked analysts by picking up the third most seats in Tunisia’s Constituent Assembly.
