The Constituent Assembly to Elect Tunisia’s Next President Tomorrow
Tomorrow the Constituent Assembly will resume its scheduled activities. Electing Tunisia’s next president is at the crux of the agenda, and it is possible that the process will continue until Thursday. The election will be followed by a swearing-in ceremony, where the current interim president, Foued Mebazaa, will be charged with the transmission of power to the president elect.
In Carthage, where the presidential palace is located, the new president will appoint the prime minister, and will invite him to announce the formation his cabinet.
Accordingly, another transference of power will be held at the prime ministry in Kasbah, Tunis.
The Constituent Assembly will hold separate, internal, elections, which will be conducted at a later date. The assembly will elect its five assistant members who will be in charge of: general legislation and management; relations with the government, the citizens, and civil society; external relations, communication, and general management.
The Constituent Assembly will not address the regulation of internal affairs of the state tomorrow. Instead, it will focus on the temporary distribution of public power.
Outlining the authority of power holders, and the relationship between the legislative, judicial, and executive branches, has been a recent source of divisive controversy among political parties as well as Tunisian citizens.
