Syrian National Council to gather in Tunis today

The Syrian National Council (SNC), the Syrian opposition’s formal and representative government-in-exile, is holding its first congress on Friday, December 16th in Gammarth, a northern suburb of Tunis. The event will last three days and will be attended by SNC leader Burhan Ghaliun and about 200 other members.

It has been reported that Arab ambassdors and human rights activists would also attend the meeting. The congress was originally scheduled to take place in September but was deferred due to the deteriorating situation in Syria.

The United Nations (UN) estimates that more than 5,000 people have died since protests broke out in Syria in mid-March, 2011. The Syrian opposition gathered this past August in Turkey to discuss the formation of a transitional council, leading to the official announcement of the SNC’s creation on August 23rd. The Libyan transitional government is known to be the first to recognize the council.
