Suha Arafat

Friday, December 16, a Tunisian judiciary panel decided to lift the arrest warrant for alleged corruption against Suha Arafat, widow of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, issued in October.

Kadhem Zine el Abidine, spokesperson of the Ministry of Justice, told AFP that  the judge assigned to the case agreed to lift the arrest warrant against Mrs. Arafat.

“I think the judge had to realize that Mrs. Arafat was not involved in this affair. I imagine she will be called as a witness, and can prove she was a victim in this case, ” Mrs. Arafat’s lawyer, Mounzer Saegher, told AFP.

In October, an indictment was issued against Suha Arafat in the case of the International School of Carthage. The school was founded in 2007 in the northern suburbs of Tunis by Leila Ben Ali, wife of Zine Al Abidine Ben Ali, and the widow of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat. Allegations claimed that this school was created  illegally in order to serve special interests.

The relationship between the two women later deteriorated, and Suha Arafat was subsequently stripped of the Tunisian nationality she had obtained in September 2006. She left Tunisia to the island of Malta, where she currently resides.
