The ATFD was recgonized for their accomplishments in the realm ofÂ feminist activism. The jury for the Simone de Beauvoir Prize chose the Tunisian Association of Democratic Women for their important role during the Tunisian uprisings in defending women’s rights and freedoms.
According to FathiaÂ Hizem, who is in charge of external relations at the ATFD,Â the organization isÂ proud to receive the award as Tunisia undergoes a historic transition. SheÂ explainedÂ that the association is determined to expand their activities nationwide during this formative period.Â ”This awardÂ motivates us andÂ pushes us toÂ work harder and increase our activity -Â particularlyÂ in rural areas,” she stated.
The jury of the Simone de Beauvoir Award consists of various artistic and academic figures. The prize was created as an initiative by JuliaÂ KristevaÂ in 2008 to mark theÂ 100th anniversary of the birthday ofÂ French philosopher and writer Simone deÂ Beauvoir.Â The awardÂ is worth 20,000Â euros, and it is sponsored byÂ the French Institute, theÂ National Book Center,Â UniversityÂ Paris Diderot,Â andÂ Gallimard Editions.
