A ruptured PIP breast implant

According to the Tunisian National Agency of Sanitary and Environmental Control of Products (ANCSEP), more than 634 PIP breast implants were imported to Tunisia between 2006 and 2010, and around 560 of them were placed. An investigation is now in place in an effort to localize the women who underwent the surgery and to invite them to contact their surgeons.

Poly Implants Prothèses, often referred to as PIP, was a breast implant production company founded in France in 1991. It was founded by Jean-Claude Mas. According to the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS), PIP used industrial grade silicone that said to be used in the production of bed mattresses. They are much cheaper than other silicone implant products, yet they are more susceptible to rupturing, and individuals who have the implants placed have a small but increased risk inflammation reaction. The company shut down in 2010.

France has offered to remove the implants from an estimated 30,000 clients free of charge. However, in Tunisia the next steps are still in discussion. So far, the Ministry of Health has only advised clients to contact surgeons for an ultrasound follow-up. According to Dr. Mahmoud, a cosmetic surgeon based in Tunis, even though most surgeons are willing to perform this surgery free of charge, some clients might not be satisfied, particularly those who come from overseas.

ANCSEP’s Mrs. Gouiaa stated that the product, distributed by a Tunisian Company named Matrice, has been allowed to enter Tunisia but was banned in March 2010. In an effort to allay growing concerns that this scandal has created, the Tunisian authorities have made a phone number available for the public: +216 71 90 12 83

Tunisia is a popular cosmetic surgery destination for Europeans who are looking for more affordable deals and comparable quality of service from European board certified surgeons.
