Mehdi Gharbi, a Tunisian Human Rights activist exiled in Sweden, has been declared the winner of the 2012 Martin Luther King Prize. This award is presented on the third Monday of each January in Stockholm to recognize individuals who have displayed an extraordinary commitment to democracy and human rights.
For over 10 years Mehdi has been contributing to the electronic journal – Tunisnews – denouncing the dictatorship of Ben Ali. The former regime attempted to determine the location of the author for years, without ever managing track Mehdi successfully.

The Prize is awarded by a committee, which was established to recognize the efforts of Swedish human rights activists following in the footsteps of Martin Luther King.
