The fourth session of the ongoing trial of ousted President Ben Ali, and a number of senior officials within his regime, resumed today at the military court in Kef (north-western Tunisia).

Accompanied by a massive presence of security forces, the trial began with the questioning of a number of witnesses. Some of the officials questioned included Wael Mallouli, Ayachi Ben Sousseya,  and other members of the security apparatus.

Mohammed Ghannouchi – former Tunisian Prime Minister – was also called to testify as a witness for the first time since the start of the trial. According to Mohamed Ali Ghribi, one of the lawyers involved in the Thala and Kasserine Martyrs’ case, Ghanouchi’s testimony was not significantly different from his previous statements. Ghannouchi once again alleged that he was not involved in, and had no prior knowledge of, the order to open fire on protesters during last year’s uprising.

Ghribi asserted that the trial, “is reaching its conclusion,” and that all the evidence and testimony has been presented.

“Now it is up to the court to decide,” Ghribi concluded.
