Mr Adnan Mansar, spokesman for the Tunisian Presidency has announced that the Tunisian-Libyan border crossing at Ras-Jadir was closed on Friday, February 3rd, due to the deteriorating security situation: “We decided to close the crossing of Ras Jadir to give some time to our security forces to review and organize our border control procedures”. This decision was taken in agreement with the libyan authorities.

Mansar mentioned that President Marzouki has met earlier this week with Tunisian army generals and other representative of Tunisian security forces to discuss the needed reforms to reinforce border security and protection.

On Wednesday, a large army operation took place in Sfax province to neutralize a group of three armed men. The operation resulted in the death of two assaillants and the wounding of 4 security force members. Mansar has added that the operation aimed at the capture of the gunmen alive and that the group is believed to include more members.

The spokesman for the presidency has accused some members of the police and security forces unions of acts of desertion as some were on strike while most of their colleagues were mobilized to serve in the recent events: “we are in a state of emergency and such actions will not be tolerated,” declared Mr Mansar.
