Tunisian General Labor Union LogoThe Administrative Commission of the Tunisian General Labor Union (UGTT) held a meeting in Tunis yesterday, calling for a rally to take place tomorrow starting at noon in the capital’s Mohamed Ali square. The demonstration primarily seeks to condemn the attacks recently perpetrated on UGTT headquarters throughout the country, but also aims to condemn the Friends of Syria conference being held in Tunisia today.

On Tuesday, Sami Tahri, the secretary general of the General Union of Secondary Education, accused the political party Ennahda of conducting arson and vandalism on the union’s property. Ennahda has vehemently denied the claims.

In addition to the vandalism issue, the UGTT takes issue with today’s Friends of Syria summit.

“The protest will also denounce the congress of conspiracy against Syria,” announced Tahri.

However, tomorrow’s UGTT-led rally is not limiting itself to just these two points. Sami Tahri, the secretary general of the General Union of Secondary Education, explained how the protest will be denouncing several other issues in Tunisia such as the deteriorating situation in the country’s northwestern regions.

The Secretary General of the UGTT, Houcine Abbassi, stated that it is the union’s aim to “achieve the objectives of the revolution embodied in employment and the fight against poverty and marginalization.”

“We are even willing to make sacrifices in order to make progress towards these goals,” continued Abbassi. According to him, the UGTT will be open to compromise with the government on these issues once the latter shows more transparency as to how it will tackle such pressing problems facing the country.
