Hundreds Suspected of Being Connected to Crime Arrested in Southern Tunisia

In a coordinated effort, regional security forces have arrested hundreds of individuals suspected of being connected with criminal activity over the course of the past several days in Tunisia’s southern regions.

After conducting a series of spontaneous raids in the regions of Medenine, Ben Guerdane, Zarzis, and Jerba (governorate of Mednine) security officials have taken 560 individuals into custody – 360 of whom were wanted criminals implicated in a variety of previous offenses. Two fugitives that had escaped from prison were arrested during the operation and have received nine and ten year sentences respectively.

Police officials confiscated 36 stolen cars, a significant quantity of drugs, and other illicit merchandise. A number of  smuggling operations, primarily related to the trafficking of cigarettes and food into Libya, were also halted by the police.
