The Tunisian government has announced an initiative to rehabilitate 73 low-income neighborhoods located in Tunis and in other regions of the country. Thus far 267 million Tunisian Dinars – or $177 million USD – have been allocated to the project.

According to Lotfi Chatti, the press attache of the Ministry of Equipment and Housing, almost 39 of these neighborhoods are located in the underprivileged regions of the Kef, Jendouba, and Béja - located in northwestern Tunisia. The remaining 30 are situated among the various suburbs of Tunis. This initiative will reach 430,000 residents across the country.

Chatti further stated that, “This initiative aims to replace primitive dwellings for decent ones. Committees have been sent to investigate the condition of the houses, as well as the social conditions of people living in them.” He added that a survey would be conducted to investigate the matter.

The project will strive to develop basic infrastructure, improve the condition of homes and paved roads, and install drainage systems and electricity in houses. Additionally, the project aims to build community facilities, such as sports halls, recreation areas for children, and space for businesses.

The Ministry of Equipment and Housing and the Ministry of Finance are backing the project, along with the Agency for Urban Rehabilitation and Renewal (ARRU), the Tunisian Water Distribution Company (SONEDE), and the Tunisian Company of Electricity and Gas (STEG).

Although preparations have not yet commenced, the project is expected to officially launch in the fall of 2012 and will be completed by 2015.
