The Tunisian Government officially recalled the consul from the east Libyan city of Benghazi, announcing the end of his mission. This decision was made after the consul participated in a conference in Benghazi on March 6th, 2012, that called for the autonomy of Eastern Libya, historically known as Cyrenaica.

The official spokesperson of the Tunisian presidency, Adnen Mansar, announced the Tunisian government’s official apology to the Libyan government regarding this incident.

The apology was announced during a press conference held in the Presidential Palace in Carthage on March 14th, 2012.

Mansar stated that the consul would be sanctioned for not having first consulted the Tunisian Ministry of Foreign Affairs before he attended the conference. He condemned any behavior or act that might affect diplomatic relations between Libya and Tunisia. “His mission has been ended now,” Mansar stressed to Tunisia Live.

On Friday March 16th, Tunisian Foreign Minister Rafik Abdessalem will receive Ashour Ben Khayal, Libyan Minister of Foreign Affairs. Ben Khayal will attend a consultation meeting along with the Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mohamed Amrou – who is in Tunis for a two-day diplomatic visit.

The three ministers will discuss ways to enhance economic cooperation between Tunisia, Libya and Egypt, as well as how to coordinate their positions on the Arab and international scenes.
