Yassine El Brigui, the man who is accused of desecrating the Tunisian flag at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at Manouba University turned himself in today, April 5, to the Ministry of Human Rights and Transitional Justice.

Chakib Derwich, a press attaché from the ministry, said that El Brigui “came to us because he wants to make sure he is going to have a fair trial and will not be tortured.”

Derwich added that the ministry assured El Brigui that all of methods of the previous regime has changed now, “and that everyone has the right to have a fair trial.”

According to Derwich, El Brigui was transferred to the Manouba court in charge of the case and he will undergo legal processing.

The Manouba University incident started last March when one of the students replaced the Tunisian flag with a black flag bearing the shahada – the Islamic declaration of faith. The act provoked an eruption of violence between members of the student union and other students.

Khaoula Rashidi, a University of Manouba student gained national celebrity after a video circulated of her attempting to stop the Tunisian flag from being taken down. On March 12 she was honored by Tunisian president Moncef Marzouki. During the ceremony the President condemned the violation of the flag and emphasized its symbolic sanctity.
