TANIT, the first car-ferry from the Tunisia Shipping Company (CTN), set sail on its inaugural voyage from the port of La Goulette to Genoa, Italy on Saturday evening, according to TAP.

Abdelkarim Harouni, the Tunisian Minister of Transport, visited Busan, South Korea with a Tunisian delegation to mark the creation of the ferry.

On Wednesday, the Tunisian Interim Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali,  Tunisian President Moncef Marzouki, and the Head of the Constituent Assembly Mustapha Ben Jafaar held an inauguration ceremony to celebrate the upcoming voyage.

Beyond luxury services and facilities, the vessel has a capacity for 1,060 cars.

According to TAP, the company will incentivize travel with a reduced fare for Tunisian expats.

A concurrent change in the customs law will further benefit Tunisians. A change to the law banning cars older than three years will be expanded to include cars less than five years old starting July 1st, increasing the flow of imported cars.

Trips on TANIT will take less than 18 hours to reach the ports of Genoa and Marseille from La Goulette, thanks to a top speed of 27.5 knots (around 52 km/hour).

Despite the amazing size, Daewoo Shipbuilding-the company that built the ferry- managed to create a vessel both massive and environmentally friendly.

With this purchase, CTN is intending to consolidate its position in the Mediterranean Sea market, further developing the quality of its services in an effort to promote tourism in Tunisia, which dropped significantly after the revolution.
