In the first five months of 2012, tourism revenue in Tunisia increased 36.2%, from 678.3 million dinars (426.9 million dollars) during the same time last year, to 924.0 million Tunisian dinars, according to TAP.

TAP writes that tourism revenue is still 12.4% what it was in the same period in 2010,  according to the Tunisian National Tourism Board (ONTT).

The largest group of tourists comes from Libya, valued at 813,746 visitors in the first five months of 2012. European tourism increased 53.6% from the same time last year, with 755, 401 visitors, according to ONTT figures cited by TAP.

The same figures also show that American tourism increased by 68.1% with 12,366 Americans visiting so far this year.

This is welcome economic news as Tunisia works to revive its economy, especially in the aftermath of the 2011 Tunisian revolution.

Tunisia is currently facing an unemployment rate of about 18%. These tourism statistics are positive as Tunisia works to revive its economy. According to the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, tourism accounts for 6.5% of Tunisian GDP and is the largest source of foreign currency for the Tunisian economy.
