Tunisian Foreign Minister Rafik Abdessalem attended the third Friends of Syria meeting in Paris on Friday, according to TAP.

In the meetings, Abdessalem raised concerns with the mounting violence in Syria and called for a consensus between different actors in the Syrian opposition. He suggested that recommendations from the United Nations-Arab League international envoy be implemented, wrote TAP today.

Abdessalem also asserted the need to work towards Syrian unity and that he supported the development of a free, democratic state through increased coordination and stronger efforts to bring about a resolution to the conflict.

In addition, TAP reported that Minister Abdessalem met with foreign officials to review various proposals to solve the conflict and to coordinate with other groups in the future.

Friends of Syria is a group of international organizations and countries working to resolve the Syrian crisis. The first meeting was held on February 24 in Tunisia, with over 70 countries in attendance in response to the United Nations Security Council’s failure to pass a resolution calling for President Assad’s ouster. In the initial meeting, the Syrian National Council (SNC) was deemed the representative of the Syrian people, and a global commitment to end the conflict was reiterated.

A second meeting was held on April 1 in Istanbul, Turkey, where Minister Abdessalem called for increased humanitarian aid in Syria and condemned human rights violations committed there.
