In a press release issued today, the National Company of Water Distribution and Exploitation (SONEDE) announced the resumption of water distribution in almost all previously cut-off districts, except in high altitude regions in the governorate of Mahdia.

“This [restoration of water distribution] is the product of cooperation over the past days of between SONEDE and the National Company of Electricity and Gas Production [STEG],” stated an official from SONEDE who wished to be identified as Mrs. Termich.

Tunisia’s eastern and southern regions have faced chronic water shortages over the course of the past week. An increased demand for electricity caused by a severe heat wave has led to  power failures, resulting in intermittent access to water at the peak hours of the day.

“The water supply is being weakened everyday. In hours of peak heat – from 11:00am to 5:00pm – we’ve been facing water shortages on a daily basis for more than a week now,” stated an unnamed resident of the Sakiét Ezzit district in Sfax.

The resumption of water distribution arrives just three days after Tunisian Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali announced the establishment of an investigative committee to determine accountability for this failure to manage water supply in these regions.
