According to results of a poll released yesterday, 40% of French citizens wish to spend their holidays in Tunisia.

The survey evaluated the French perception of Tunisia as a prospective tourist destination post-revolution. 3C Etudes, a Tunisian institute that conducts research regarding the changes in media, marketing, and opinion in Tunisia, conducted the study.

According to the poll, when French citizens were asked whether they would like to visit Tunisia during the country’s transitional period, 40% the interviewees stated they would be excited to go to Tunisia, 33% were unenthusiastic, and 8% were indifferent.

The study also briefly reported on the history of French tourism in Tunisia, stating that Tunisia was consistently regarded as a popular tourism destination until the global financial crisis in 2009. During that year the total number of French citizens going on vacation decreased from 74% to 68%, making a decrease in Tunisian tourism inevitable.

Since the revolution, the Tunisian tourism industry has faced further set-backs. However, the report found that, of the 569 French citizens surveyed, 71% viewed the revolution positively and 57% stated that they believed Tunisia was a positive example for the rest of North Africa.

The study concluded that, while the revolution caused a temporary slowdown in French tourism in Tunisia, the results of this poll reveal that many French citizens are still eager to visit Tunisia.
