Tunisia has received even more promising economic news from its tourism sector. At a Friday press conference, Tunisian Tourism Minister Elyes Fakhfakh explained that tourism revenues have reached 1,150 million dinars, a 36% increase from the same period in 2011, according to TAP.

With 2.4 million tourists in the past six months, Tunisia has received a 41% increase in the number of tourists from the same period in 2011.

The interim Tunisian government has made increasing tourism, which accounts for 6.5% of the Tunisian Gross Domestic Product (GDP), a significant government and economic initiative.

In the press conference, the Minister said that the government has set aside 2012,2013, 2016, and 2020 as benchmark years to measure progress.

The government aims to welcome 7 million tourists, with revenues around 3.8 billion dollars in 2013. This goal will be increased to 10 million tourists with six billion dollar revenues and 20 million tourists with 15 billion dollar revenues in 2016 and 2020, respectively, writes TAP.

Regional affiliation is remaining a key component to increasing tourism. This news comes after a recent poll that 40% of French citizens would like to vacation in Tunisia, with the majority believing tbat Tunisia is a symbol for revolutionary success in the region. Within the Maghreb, Algerian tourism has seen an increase from 2011, with 305,000 Algerian tourists visiting Tunisia since the start of 2012 alone.
