Volkswagen, a leading European car manufacturer, is set to open a production unit in Tunisia.

On Saturday, Slim Besbes, Secretary of State within the Ministry of Finance, announced on Tunisian radio Shems FM that the German company will open a factory in Tunisia in an effort to supply the Middle East and North African markets.

This comes after Besbes’ visit to the Volkswagen headquarters in Wolfsburg,  where he discussed the possibility of eliminating the juridical barriers that are preventing Tunisia from recovering the Ennakl business.

The second largest importer of Volkswagen vehicles into Africa since 2007, the Ennakl company used to be owned by Ben Ali’s son-in-law, Sakhr El Materi, but has since been confiscated after the revolution and is now likely to become Tunisia’s latest recovered asset.
