Houcine Ayari, the Tunisian wrestler competing in the Men’s 96kg Greco-Roman wrestling event, lost his match today in the quarterfinal round, putting an end to his Olympic aspirations in London this year.

Ayari received a bye in the first round. The following round saw him paired against a fellow Maghrebi, Choukri Atafi of Morocco. The two opponents traded periods, with Ayari taking the first, 2-0. Atafi struck back, scoring the only point of the second period. It all came down to the the third period. Ayari scored three unanswered points in the third period, and took the match, 3-1.

In the quarterfinal match, Ayari faced Yunior Estrada Falcon of Cuba. In contrast to the previous bout, the contest was decidedly one sided. While Ayari prevented Estrada Falcon from taking a runaway lead, he could not stop the Cuban from scoring a single point in each of the first two periods, taking the match 3-0.

While wrestling results have not been particularly encouraging for Tunisia this year, there are many events that have yet to begin, such as freestyle wrestling and and women’s wrestling. Tunisia will field numerous athletes in each field.
