Tunisian kayaker Mohamed Ali Mrabet competed in the finals of Men’s Kayak Single 1000m race today, bringing his participation in the event to a close.

Mrabet finished in fifth place of Final B, a conciliation round for those who those who finished in the bottom half of the semifinals.
His performance in the race started off slowly. At the first marker, 250m into the race, Mrabet was in seventh place, 4.47 seconds behind the leader. By the halfway mark, Mrabet was still in seventh place but had dropped to 6.58 seconds behind leader Jorge Antonio Garcia of Cuba. Mrabet, however, was not finished. In the final 500 meters, he closed the gap to 3.577 seconds and had clawed his way into fifth, finishing with a time of 3:33.515.

The overall winners of the event, who raced in Final A, were Eirik Veras Larsen of Norway, winning the gold medal with a time of 3:26.462, Canada’s Adam van Koeverden in second /with a time 3:27.170, and Max Hoff of Germany, taking home the bronze with a time of 3:27.759.

Though he will go home without a medal, Mrabet can return with pride on his side. His performance in the event was far from disappointing. In the qualifying heat, he finished with a time of 3:32.204, putting him in fourth place in his heat, 12 out of 24 overall, and qualifying him for the semifinals. In the semis, the Tunisian struggled, finishing with his worst time overall, 3:44.545, putting in him in Final B and out of medal contention.

Although Mrabet did not win a medal in this event, his strong performance bodes well for the future of Tunisian Olympic participation. Despite having little in the way of navigable water in the country to practice with, Tunisia has fielded two rowers and three canoe/kayakers at this year’s Olympics in London, each with varying levels of success. Those looking to catch more of Mrabet’s performance in London this year can tune in Friday to see him race in the Men’s Kayak Single 200m race.
