Twenty Tunisian pilgrims are expected to arrive at the Ras Jedir border crossing between Tunisia and Libya at noon today, an official in the Tunisian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said to Tunisia Live.

The pilgrims, mostly elderly residents of southern Tunisia, are returning to Tunisia after having completed the Hajj, the Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca. They have crossed both Egypt and Libya by land from Saudi Arabia.

These pilgrims faced difficulties in their journey home and were stranded at the Egyptian-Libyan border crossing of Sallum between November 2 and yesterday.

Egyptian authorities had prevented the pilgrims from entering Libya, and the latter appealed to the Tunisian government to act on their behalf. In an interview on Radio Tataouine, Tunisian Ambassador to Egypt Mahmoud Khemiri said that he contacted Egyptian Passport and Immigration Control on November 3 and made the necessary steps to ultimately finalize the pilgrims’ passage into Libya.

The Tunisian pilgrims traveled last month to Saudi Arabia by land through Libya and Egypt and completed the Hajj on October 25, which marks the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha.
