Clashes between police and an unknown group of armed men on the Algerian border resulted this afternoon in the death of one policeman. The incident occurred near the town of Feriana in the governorate of Kasserine.

“The armed men seem to be terrorists with a political agenda,” said Mohamed Neji Gharsali, a National Constituent Assembly member affiliated with the Progressive Democratic Party and lawyer in Kasserine. He added that the clashes happened specifically in the region of Darneya, which lies along the Algerian border.

According to Kasserine News, the name of the dead policeman is 28-year old Anis Jelassi, who is now in the regional hospital of Kasserine, and another policeman was injured. The clashes occurred as the local police were undertaking a combing operation, reported the same source.

The police are now searching for the attackers.

“Even though they escaped and we still did not capture them, the police is surrounding now the place, trying to arrest them,” said a local police officer in Feriana, speaking on the condition of anonymity.
