Mokhtar Chaouachi

Ambassador Chaouachi  is a 32-year career diplomat. He is currently the permanent representative of Tunisia to the African Union, ECA, UNEP, and UN Habitat as well as the resident ambassador to Ethiopia in charge of other countries such as Seychelles, Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, and Comoros. Prior to his appointment in Ethiopia, Ambassador Chaouachi was director general of the Department of International Organizations and Conferences. This position allowed him to oversee Tunisia’s multilateral relations.

Ambassador Chaouachi is the Tunisian diplomat that has spent the longest assignment in the U.S. as he was part of the permanent mission of Tunisia at the UN from 1993 to 2002. During this assignment, Ambassador Chaouachi was the representative of Tunisia when it was part of the security council from 2000 to 2001.

His first diplomatic assignment was at the Embassy of Algiers from 1984 to 1990. His first nomination as an ambassador was in Norway between 2003 and 2005.

Ambassador Chaouachi, who speaks English fluently, graduated in 1978 from the School of Journalism (IPSI) in Tunis with a bachelor degree. He joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1981. He is married and a father of 2 children.

    As an American with a love for Tunisia and the people of Tunisia, I congratulate Mr. Chaouachi on his appointment. He appears to be a dedicate and loyal servant to the concept of diplomacy and service to Tunisia. I would love to meet this man as he appears to be a wise and gentle soul.
