A young man set himself on fire this morning in front of the Municipal Theater in downtown Tunis and was taken to the regional Hospital of Injuries and Severe Burns in Ben Arous, a southern suburb of Tunis.

The man is 27 years old and in very critical situation, according to a source at the hospital. He is suffering from third degree burns on 90% of his body.

The hospital declined to disclose his identity. Information circulating on Twitter claimed that the man’s name is Adel Khedhri and that he is originally from the northwestern governorate of Jendouba.

He was rescued by nearby policemen, who intervened in an attempt to extinguish the fire. A huge crowd gathered around to witness the occurrence, and police pushed them back before the ambulance came to take the victim away.

According to a witness, the young man stood at the top of the stairs leading to the theater and said, “This is the youth; This is joblessness.” Then, he took a cigarette lighter and set himself on fire.

Sitting on those steps , watching the hurly-burly of the avenue, will never be the same again….The monks of tibet drop their bodies in this form , too.It is a gesture to defy oppression, and although we may not be able to provide jobs in a society , it is possible to develop a culture of gentle non-oppression, and this costs nothing. The concepts of gentleness and mercy are onthe tongues of so many tunisians five times a day, in prayer.
