The body of Faisal Baraket, a late member of Ennahdha ruling party known during the 90’s as Itijah al-Islami movement, was reinterred on Saturday after having been exhumed on March 1st, 2013 for an autopsy, according to Shoura Council member Zoubeir Chehoudi.

The symbolic funeral was attended by a number of ministers and figures from international organizations such as Abdelwahab Maatar, Minister-Designate of Trade in Prime Minister Ali LAaarayedh’s new government, in addition to representatives from Amnesty International, led by Dr. Eric Paundar, an international observer of  Barakat’s case since 1999.

Barakat died mysteriously in 1991 during the reign of ousted President Zine el Abidine Ben Ali, prompting Tunisian authorities after the 2011 revolution to investigate the cause of his death.  On March 1st, the public prosecutor of the northeastern governorate of Nabeul ordered the examination of Barakat’s body to discover the truth behind his death.

Barakat was born on May 4, 1966 in Nabeul and later became a student at the Faculty of Sciences in Tunis.  In 1987, he was charged with belonging to an unauthorized association and subsequently arrested and interrogated by the National Guard in Nabeul. On October 8, 1991, Barakat was pronounced dead as a result of a traffic accident.

The medical team that performed the new autopsy concluded that the cause of death was due to torture and not a traffic fatality, as originally reported in 1991.
