Manoubia Bouazizi, whose son Mohamed Bouazizi lit himself on fire and helped fuel an uprising in Tunisia that reverberated throughout the region, was sentenced today by the first instance court of Sidi Bouzid to four months on probation.

Following her arrest, Bouazizi was detained for a week in a civil prison for women in Gafsa. In court today, Bouazizi admitted to her crime and expressed regret for her behavior.
According to TAP, Bouazizi’s defense lawyers – counting on the defendant’s clean record – had asked for a lower sentence after the judge in question dropped the charges against her.
