Tunisian Minister of Industry, Commerce, and Handicrafts, Mohamed Lamine Chakhari, has announced that natural gas channels will reach the remote northwestern regions of the country starting in 2013. The announcement was made during the 50th anniversary celebration of the Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company (STEG), which took place yesterday.Gas lines are planned to extend from the governorate of Kasserine to those of Siliana, Jendouba, Beja, and El Kef. Harsh weather in the form of heavy snowfall and low temperatures has been a major challenge for inhabitants of Tunisia’s northwestern towns and villages during the winter.According to TAP, Chakhari stated that the program aims at meeting the needs of residents in poorer areas of the northwest, who are deprived of adequate energy resources, particularly during the winter season.STEG has reported on their official website that they plan on enhancing their natural gas distribution network to target social groups who have not benefited from STEG’s natural gas program.
