Free Entrance to Museums on Occasion of Revolution’s Two-Year Anniversary

09 January 2013 | 2 Comments

Visitors can view ancient mosaics, such as the featured one, for free at the National Museum of Bardo in Tunis

Museums and historical sites will be open to the Tunisian public free of charge throughout the country from January 11 to 15.

The entrances granted to the public comes in addition to the free access that is already provided to staff of the Ministry of Culture.

“It is a favor that is given to citizens, who are involved in the festivities of the second anniversary of the revolution, and cultural activities will be organized on this occasion as well,” said Nessrine Ben Dekhil, a press attaché at the Ministry of Culture, to Tunisia Live.

“Those who have not had a day time to visit a museum or tourist site, will certainly have the opportunity to decide to stop by,” she said.

    What a wonderful idea.
As an American journalist who has had the privilege of visiting
so many of Tunisia’s museums and marvelous historical sites, it’s
great to see this opportunity being extended, so rightly, to the
    Tunisian people.

The ministries involved (arts, culture, antiquities) might also consider setting aside a day each week with free admittance to students, senior citizens, and just one free-admittance day. Most museums internationally do this and know its value. People learn to appreciate their culture and history in a richer way when they visit museums and historical sites.

I can’t think of a better way in post-revolution Tunisia for citizens to learn more about their country’s historic past, so pivotal on the world stage — just as Tunisia’a present can be also with freedom.

Giving more average citizens free access to their cultural heritage
would also go a long way to showcasing Tunisia’s varied and open history. When Tunisians, especially young people, realize that, there will be less support for those individuals and groups who want to drag it back into repression and oppression.

This is a fine move and hopefully a first start for other similar
    opportunities. Congratulations!
