Hotel Abou Nawas Montazah – Tabarka

23 September 2011 | 1 Comment

The lobby in the Abou Nawas is beautiful, but looks are deceiving in this case.

Booking your package tour to Tabarka for a relaxing geataway? Great! Staying at the four-star Hotel Abou Nawas – not so great! The problem with the Abou Nawas Montazah is not its amenities. Upon entering the reception area you are in awe of its stylish and chic interior resembling a ski lodge. It’s quite tempting to make a reservation just off of this alone, but do not do it. You will be overpaying for a room that is nothing better than that in a derelict Days Inn in a small town off of a highway in the United States.

If the quality of where you are sleeping does not matter to you, then by all means, the Abou Nawas Montazah is a fine choice. The lobby is clean, the pool and bar area are clean and accessible and the breakfast is passable, if a bit mediocre. The private beach and animation team (the people who involve you in resort events) are excellent. For the price per room, however, Tunisia Live does not recommend the Hotel Abou Nawas Montazah.

Our team paid a semi-low Medium Season rate of 40 dinars per person per night. We booked a double room for two people with the total cost being 80 DT/night. At the beginning, this seemed like the best deal in town as other hotels did not seem to offer the same quality for the price. We expected quite a bit, as this is a well-known four star resort. The first sign of disappointment, however, came while navigating through the halls to find our room. The hallways look as though a horror movie has been filmed within them. In a word, they were simply dated.

Our room

Dated is also the exact word to define our room. We were shocked that after seeing such a nice reception, bar and pool that the room we were actually staying in could look as it did. The two beds we were given were standard twin size beds. If you prefer a soft mattress, then that is another reason to stay away as the beds in the room were quite firm. The floor was also dirty and the light switches were so low on the wall its as if they were designed as toys for children. Expectations, in discovering where we would be sleeping, collided with reality quite harshly.

The sink, simple as it is, was the highlight of the bathroom

The bathroom was far below our expectations as well. It is small and cheap looking due to all the plastic. The shower head had such strong water pressure that it soaked the entire bathroom when turned on. The toilet is cheap and plastic and the flushing mechanism had to be jiggled to get it back into its original place. The sink was functional at best, and thus became the best part of the bathroom.

The room left us truly disappointed. The view from the room, however, benefited from Tabarka’s natural beauty as our small balcony offered a great view of the Kroumirie Mountains.

Overall, one is better served when visiting Tabarka to stay at a different hotel than the Abou Nawas Montazah. While we had no complaints about the service, the fact that the rooms appear to be built for the 1970s is enough for us to recommend competitors.

The bar is one of the good things at the Abou Nawas

Room rates were unavailable at publication. A double is 80 Dinars/night and a single is 60 Dinars/night during the current “middle season”.
